Seating fee, otoshi, sucks. It's a thing at Izakaya but I wish I'd asked. Also not getting a receipt which I asked for being shocked about the otoshi. Got a card with a signature and the price instead of a copy of the reciept but, whatever.
Must have caught the two in a bad mood with no other people in the restaurant on a Monday night at around 8. The lady at the desk said all the typical things in a Japanese manner, aside from asking me if I was okay with entering the Izakaya at the door at the start.
I said my partner didn't drink. They gave us the drink menu and I asked for a food menu and they said they wanted us to order drinks first which was fine (you have to order a drink before ordering food, at least at night).
We had two haichu, a tonkatsu set, an ajinantsuke (basically fish in vinegar) and a monteiko chazuke. Honestly, I didn't realise it was an Izakaya till I went in and we weren't super hungry which gave the atmosphere a bad feeling.
The staff only spoke English once and that was to each other, after we ordered to the chazuke. It felt like they were mocking us when they were giggling.
The mentaiko and the ajinan were at least both an experience. The food was fine. Better than in Australia, but not what I expected. Very, very salty.
