This is the place you want to go to have a sushi experience. It's very small and a very collective experience. When we were there, it was about 50/50 tourist to local, but it seemed like the locals came there for the sushi as much as the conversation with the tourists. We sat at the sushi bar, and if you have that opportunity, take it over the 3 small tables. The sushi chef, a master as told to me by a local, was very personable and serious about what he was doing. The miso was the best I have ever had, and the green tea was rich. I liked it a lot, but my wife thought it was a bit too strong. The sushi was delicate and hand made and when it was served on the 45 degree angle counter the chef went one by one through the set we ordered and said 'soy, no soy, touch wasabi, no wasabi'. When we were done, the bill was reasonable, and the transaction was simple and honest. Only cash, no cards of any kind, and like most Japanese places... no tip expected or requested. We were 7800 yen for two people, and it was worth every penny. It's a place you could walk right by if you were not looking and when it's full, they just politely wave people away so as not to rush the patrons inside. They were probably husband and wife and entirely invested in what they were doing. I would go back again in a heartbeat but only in town for two dinner opportunities and also needed to hit up a Raman place as well. I will review that place if it's...
Read moreHaving just posted a review of lunch as the best sushi I had ever had, I am about to say Takasakiya beats even that! Firstly, we walked in at lunch and booked for that evening - definitely do this as they were full in the evening and countless people were turned away. Run by the most glorious couple - husband and wife who are good humoured, kind, hard working and amazingly tolerant of my useless Japanese language skills! We sat at the counter - do this because he serves your sushi on this which is a novelty alone. We didn’t order the omakase as value for money aside (noting other reviews), we wanted to pick our favourite bits and take recommendations. We had grilled Blackthroat Perch (seasonal) and it was utterly breathtaking. Every single cut of sushi was exceptional - beautifully fresh and flawless. Wasabi as light as a feather with the right punch and accompanied with excellent green tea and delicious miso soup. Quite staggered at the comments regarding price. Our meal of, in excess of 30 pieces of sushi with two Asahi beers, cost 7000 YEN. You are eating the freshest sushi, painstakingly prepared by one person, in Japan. Put simply - this is well below what I would be paying in London which is a delight in itself but it’s also the fair price for what you are getting - stunning food and excellent service. Absolutely go and enjoy - sad to not be able...
Read moreA quaint sushi restaurant run by a couple who are clearly so passionate about their food and offering the best possible experience. Offer a wide range of nigiri sushi in addition to omakase (chef's choice) sets allowing you to sample a wide range of sushi at a reasonable price.
The restaurant is small and often quite busy, so you may expect to wait some time before being served, but it's certainly worth it for the flavoursome range of sushi. Trust the chef, his choices are superb and allow you to sample some local delicacies from Kanazawa!
For tourists, please keep in mind you will need reasonable Japanese language comprehension and speaking to get the most out of this restaurant. My wife and I both speak intermediate Japanese and were able to easily order and converse with the staff. However, due to the popularity of the restaurant, many diners spoke no Japanese at all and had significant difficulty ordering and unfortunately caused some frustration among the staff, who were trying their hardest to...
