My husband is 6’ 5” and not very flexible so not a comfortable place to dine, but it was worth it. You start with having to duck down to get through the door. It is maybe 3.5 feet tall. Maybe it’s a test to keep certain people out. Then their “seats” are about 4 inches off the ground, then you eat off of these beautiful wooden boxes. But the food is like a very fancy poke bowl where you pick the ingredients which change based on season and freshness. Don’t miss the miso soup which is very innovative. Beware of obnoxious tourists. A couple came in and asked where the real tables and chairs are for tourists (oxymoron) were. The staff did find some regular chairs, but once placed, the tourists asked to be seated someplace else. Once seated, they said, “Ah, that’s more civilized!” Thank goodness they weren’t Americans, as I’ve been embarrassed enough by my countrymen on this visit. They weren’t English.

I'm an English-speaking local guide here in Kanazawa. I took the foreign guests to the restaurant over a year ago and they were so excited and enjoyed the whole process of the sushi bowl experience. First you need a pass code to open the entrance door to get in the restaurant, which will definitely make you thrilled to step into a hidden place. The wooden-made building has been renovated in a modern and stylish way. You can choose the ingredients for the sushi bowl among the wide variety of choices accommodating your taste. After the ingredients and sushi rice is served in beautiful glass wares, you pick up each ingredient and then put it on the rice by yourself. All the ingredients were fresh and tasted good, the portion of the sushi bowl might have been a bit too small for a man in his 40s though.

4.65 - If you seek for an unique dinning experience in Kanazawa, this will be the right place for you. From the moment you enter into the property, you will experience a number of things that you usually don't or not need to do (I let you find out what I mean after you have visited here). Restaurant setup is very clever in term of interior design, decoration and dining philosophy. They are extraordinary and meaningful in some ways. E.g. Bow down when you enter and exit the property -> in order to demonstrate respect and appreciation...Overall, food quality is above standard. You won't regret coming here.

STAY AWAY. I never write negative reviews, but I’ll make an exception, because it was the WORST meal I’ve had in all of Japan.

The place has an interesting and unique concept, but it’s all an elaborate gimmick geared towards tourists on Instagram. (I was initially impressed that all the staff spoke excellent English, but now I know exactly why.)

Basically, they have some interesting “fake Japanese” features (the front door has to be crawled under, the seats are small cushions, etc), and they use extremely fancy plates and cutlery.

But as soon as you see the food itself and taste it, you realise you’ve been scammed.

Examples:

I got the Shojin bowl, the “vegetarian” option. They did not serve me any REAL shƍjin ryƍri — they just cut some cucumbers, some bell peppers, some shiitake mushrooms, etc and put them into beautiful square jars, and that’s it. The only thing on my plate that had any flavour was the rice, which came in a huge fancy glass goblet.

My Japanese friend got the not-vegetarian Japanese option, but even there, it was again everyday run-of-the-mill Japanese ingredients (stuff you buy at the convenience store) in individual glass jars.

Would only recommend it to my...

Conclusion

Food decent but nothing special. Seems it’s all gimmick and not substance. From having to enter a code to get in, even though we could see the staff right through the glass, to having to duck through a tiny 1 meter high door, to sitting on the floor with nowhere to put one’s legs and no back support. I have been doing yoga almost daily for 25 years and even I found it uncomfortable to sit in half lotus position for the duration of the meal.

Guests sit side by side. ALL guests. Therefore do not come with more than 2 if you want to chat. Additionally, if at some point you want to stretch your leg out from under you it seems rude because a stranger is right next to you and now your unshod foot is dangerously close to their meal.

DO NOT WEAR A DRESS.

Service at the table was good. Some of the items were tasty but fish chopped so small as to put into question the quality. Fine sashimi is as much about the way chef slices the fish as it is the provenance.

Weirdly, Tile, and it’s sister restaurant, Coil (see my review there), are two of the highest rated in Kanazawa but I suspect instagrammers, not foodies, are...
