We made a reservation for dinner during our stay near Kanazawa station since it is within walking distance and still available. We ordered a 600 gram 能登Kani (crab, half steamed, half sashimi ), and two other items (Agedashi tofu, 能登beef sushi) with a bill of over 25000 Japanese yen. The biggest disappointment was that the kani came with a claw missing (defective?) and we only realized that later in the course of meal and my wife did mention that to the waitress at the end of our meal but she just shrugged it off. Btw, she did not even offer to refill our teas during all our meal time. We are not making a big deal out of it but just feel a bit cheated (and doubt their honesty) since they knew we were foreign visitors when we gave our last name in English in making our reservation. Anyway, an advice for foreigners to avoid ordering crabs but sushi might be ok. For sure we will not be returning to this restaurant although Japan is still one of the countries we...
Read moreThe food was delectable and beautifully prepared. Most things we ordered were pleasant, from the humble tamagoyaki to the umami notoushi. As well, the seasonal vegetable salad offered variety and an abundance of healthy greens presented artfully on the plate.
However, I was disappointed in the shiroebi kakiage. While it was fried light and crisp, I couldn’t actually detect any shiroebi. I scrutinised every bite and ended up picking out a lot of onions. I had to wonder if any shiroebi was even in the kakiage. Furthermore, the mentai cream cheese sushi was a bit flat and boring. Otherwise, we quite enjoyed our dinner here.
I liked that we had our own semi-private booth. The seclusion always creates a more comfortable dining experience. They have an English menu available, albeit rudimentary in appearance.
On the whole, Cho-hachi serves up some interesting dishes. I wouldn’t oppose another visit if I had the...
Read moreFantastic upscale dining experience. They have all the Kanazawa specialties including Noto beef, nodoguro (rosy sea bass), gori (small freshwater fish), and kano-gani (snow crab, very expensive!). All their food is excellent and it was one of the top 5 meals I've ever had in Japan. They have MUCH more than just sushi, although it is primarily seafood.
I went when they opened at 11:30am on a Sunday. I was easily able to get seated without a reservation and by the time I left at 12:30, there were still plenty of seats. It's probably not necessary to make a reservation unless you go during busy days (Saturday, holidays), you have a large group, or...
