Magosaburo Kagomachiten — Restaurant in Kumamoto

Although not the worst meal I've had in Japan, it wasn't great. House red wine was boxed and, besides not tasting great, also tasted off... Boxed wine has a good shelf life, but it still has a shelf life. When questioned about the wine it was shrugged off and concerns ignored... The staff were caught giggling and looking at us. Could've been a coincidence, not sure. Either way, not great and not the hospitality you would expect in Japan. We had the meat platter which consisted of a few cuts that were clearly reheated and added to the platter and a few items that were cooked fresh. Not terrible, not amazing. Some of the meat was good, some was quite fatty. The sausages were so-so (I've been spoilt by amazing sausages from the UK so I'm a tough critic when it comes to sausages... But I've had better in Japan). Platter had a small amount of wedges on it and some veggies but that's forgivable as this was a meat platter after all. Wedges (in the menu, not on the platter) are advertised as having anchovy salt on them so we avoided them in favour of 'spicy' fries... They weren't spicy and seemed to have the very anchovy seasoning on them... the thing we'd actually just tried to avoid. The salad was ok (it was a green salad so could hardly go wrong) and the dressing with it was on the side so you could choose how much you wanted - this was good and a nice touch. Waiter (except for giggling about the wine) was actually very polite...

Not terrible. But not great. Won't be coming back.

The service was great. And the presentation of the food was excellent. But they use fancy presentation for medicore food.

We came for the oyaster special event. The oyaster were amazing. But for a limited time only.

We tried some of their normal menu as well. We got fried steak for example. It was just steak katsu. And it just wasn't a very good cut of meat. For the price we could have gotten an amazing katsudon bowl with better meat. The anchovies potatoes were tasty, but it was literally 6 bites and done. The picture made it look like a different dish. Which leads me to the pictures in the menu. They are nothing like what you get served. In Japan it's pretty normal to see a picture of what is actually served. The pictures in this menu we quickly learned are embellished fantasy. Nothing we ordered off the regular menu was the same size or quality as the pictures in the menu.

Again, the place wasn't terrible, but too many little things that weren't great that we would rather waste our time and money on the many 5 star...

I do not agree with most of the negative reviews, I have been to this establishment on three different occasions, and have had different entrees every time. Every visit I have had numerous items. Each dish with their own great flavor. Highly recommend, the Cassis and Orange for any who would love to enjoy a light drink with their meal. Definitely would recommend trying, let your own taste buds decide whats...
