We stopped in here for dinner on our first night in Kusatsu and I am glad we did. It wasn't too busy and our order was taken quickly. The restaurant itself is cosy with a friendly vibe. We both went for the cold soba noodles with seven assorted tempura. The food came in about 10 minutes and was amazing. Soba noodles were firm and chewy, with a smoked soy dipping sauce. The tempura was fresh and hot. One piece was squid which was not at all chewy - a first for me with squid tempura. Prawn tempura was perfectly cooked and juicy, and there was also an assortment of mushroom tempura and a single whitefish piece. Dinner also came with pickles, spring onions, and some sugar sweets. Read moreWent with a group of 4 and had arguably our most enjoyable lunch in Kusatsu. We were walking past the previous day and saw through the window someone make soba noodles from scratch and figured we had to go back to try it.
We had combinations of hot/cold soba noodles, tempura and eel. The noodles had a wonderful texture. The tempura included different types of beautifully battered Japanese mushrooms. They have around 20 seats so do expect a wait around peak dining periods. We arrive around 1235pm and only got in just after 1pm.
Their signature buckwheat soba and Maetake mushroom tempura is a must try! They also have duck and local horse meat. For foreigners, there is an English menu.
