Café Agaru — Restaurant in Kyoto

Go for peace and quiet and a break from your phone 😊 The view of ducks in the river and the atmosphere was relaxing. They have the menu in English. The owner was very sweet and polite, clearly very proud of his beautiful, peaceful cafe.

We got the coffee, ham and cheese toastie, toast with red beans (“anko” on menu)

You take your shoes off as you come in. There’s a bell, we were scared to ring it because it was so quiet in there, but ring if you want to ask for the cheque. You get up to go to the till when you have your money ready. We paid in cash, not sure if they accept card.

The female staff/owner assumed my husband and I didn’t speak Japanese so she was rude from the beginning — instead of greeting us, she came out to scold at us to take off our shoes (which we already did).

Because she was still taking away empty cups from the only available seating, we waited and thought she would let us know when the seats were ready. Instead, she impatiently said “What are you waiting for?”

The place is just adorable, the owners are very sweet and friendly and the view over the small “river” is so relaxing and peaceful. The second floor is just as lovely and quiet, though you can’t really watch the river flowing.
