Delicious!
To work up an appetite to enjoy the delicious food at Gyatei, start your day with a stroll through the tranquil and beautiful Arashiyama bamboo grove.
The end of the grove is one of the entrance to the Kameyama Koen, a beautiful hilly park with promises of monkeys (which we did not encounter) and warnings of boars (which I'm thankful that we did not encounter). Wander the park and enjoy the beautiful settings. But also heed the posted warnings. Don't walk into restricted areas.
At the top of the hill is a viewing deck with an excellent line of site to the river below. Have some water and lite snack with you if you plan to take enjoyment of Kameyama Koen. There are no vendors in the park. Please do not leave any rubbish behind. Take back down the hill and properly dispose anything you bring with you.
After Kameyama Koen, visit the merchants around Arashiyama station. There are lots of tourists, but it does not make the place less interesting.
Food related specialities here are mochi, matcha and pickled vegetables. There are artisan stores that have beautiful (and some, very expensive) souvenirs.
After you've worked up an appetite, and it's after 10:30, enjoy an AYCE buffet at Gyatei. As of this writing, the cost was 2000yen per adult. The price is very reasonable for the quality and selection of items served. There is an hour limit, so use that stomach space judiciously as there are some items definitely worth...

Staff hand guided me to go upstairs but I pointed to my knees to let her know I had knee problem and another guy staff then ushered me to the ground floor - I realised no one on ground floor (maybe they closed the section?) and I was ushered to the table right at the end… hmm 🤔 but am grateful they allowed me in the ground floor la.
The place was recommended by my day tour guide. It was something I wanted to try watching YouTube before I came Japan, haha! Tbh, I’m not a fussy eater- so I may not be the best judge for obanzai. But o was now how pretty it looked and to me every little dish is so pretty and appealing and every dish has its exquisite taste. I enjoyed the meal very much. The set was 2800yen and I added the tofu something lolll 500yen. anyway I enjoyed my...
Read moreA decently priced all-you-can-eat place with various selection of Japanese dishes to taste!
My recommended menu: Yudofu (hot tofu served with broth) Chawanmushi (steamed egg with vegetables) Pumpkin tofu Caramel pudding served with fresh cream (Just make sure you sample each of the dishes they serve--it's worth it!)
It was lunch time when I visited, so the queue was quite long and I waited for about 30 minutes. They don't speak English, but they provide you with a written note (in English) about their rules (the maximum duration is 1 hour). I had a...
