Definitely the place to go for your meals if you're looking for the authentic Japanese "over the counter" experience. Karako is a cozy little eatery with the chef and his apprentice, where they serve a good variety of Ramen paired with the best Karrage I've ever eaten.

The food is extremely affordable, with set meals going for lower than 1000„. The meal we got came with 1 Ramen of your choice, a bowl of rice and 3 chunky pieces of Karrage.

Another set comes with "grilled rice", which is this crazy fragrant fried rice.

The chef also prepares side dishes, absolutely free for all. There were pickles, yakisoba, cabbages and condiments served on little bowls.

We stuffed ourselves at Karako on a cold and windy evening, and it was the best dining experience we had in Kyoto.

We went back for lunch on our last day, and will come back again if we ever visit Kyoto...

Came here my first night in Kyoto. It’s a small sized ramen bar with a hearty, hardened chef at the helm who is more than happy to serve you even if you’re a foreigner with only basic Japanese skills.

I grabbed a seat and sat down. The broth was delightful, the portion sizes were large (I had 2 too many pieces of chicken accompanying my ramen bowl, far too much even for an eager eater like myself) and overall it was delicious. The only gripe I might have is the place was a bit dingy, and the people smoking at the bar itself ruined things a bit as there wasn’t too much ventilation.

But I did have a lovely conversation with the customer next to me and it was a great meal overall. Would come back next time...

Wondering around Google map to see which restaurant suits our ideal price. This shop pop up close and is not too expensive. We went in early and saw the uncle sitting there (i tot was a customer). He immediately came and greet us and gave us a seat. He also told us there are free small dishes so feel free to try them. The portion is as always, big(too big for us) but it has a very good price for it. The karage is very nice. Ramen too is superb. The set is around 900+ which includes a ramen, karage and rice. Overall, the staff is nice and friendly,...

Though call. On the one hand the place is hands down disgusting. Everything looks filthy. Don't even dare to go to the bathroom. You will need a strong stomach not only to withstand the "hygiene-first" interiors but also in order to digest the huge amounts of saturated fatty acids you're about to shove down your face. On the other hand there's a weird charm about the little joint. Side dishes for free, stupid hand drawn cartoon-signs everywhere plus the suspender wearing owner is the sweetest. If your favorite taste is butter, go for it.
