Masayoshi Japanese Dining — Restaurant in Kyoto

Might be the language barrier but the service was horrible. We weren't explained that we have to order before we get sat. Then after waiting and only given 1 menu for a group of 7 we were able to order. The server was bothered we were slow to order and didn't know what we wanted, but how could we know what to order when we weren't given any instructions beforehand, and kept sighing when we would ask questions. We then get seated and the server had to keep calling out the meats and sizes, when that's the servers job, to serve us our plates. It felt like I was at McDonald's waiting to hear my number. We were told all plates would come with miso and rice, which turned out is not true. One person in our party ordered 2 different steaks but was bought out 2 of the same steaks. After explaining to him how they were the same they took it back to the chef to see what kind of meat they bought out , cause the server didn't know which steak was which. The lack of the knowledge of the servers was a bit disappointing. We placed an order for another drink, and it was never bought out. So we placed it again with another server. The first server noticed he didn't bring it out and so he quickly put it in. So two drinks came out 20 minutes later , and we were told it was the same drink but they both had different flavors. They then bought our rice and soup at the end, when all the meat was gone. Our dirty empty played were in front of us till the end. Out of the seven they only took 2 plates... overall i had high expectations for the food and service considering this isn't a cheap place. All the meats are supposed to be waygu quality. And they weren't what I was expecting. I've had better...

We got their Kobe beef special that was 12,000 yen (close to $100 at the time of ordering) and the cheapest Angus steak set with rice (came with a soup too). Service was great, everyone was nice and polite. The atmosphere is nice too, really quiet music and nice lighting, we were next to a small garden courtyard and it was lovely. The reason I'm rating it slightly lower is because the Kobe beef steak we got wasn't rare as we ordered it, the fries on both steaks were quite soaked in oil, and in general we felt a bit ripped off for the price. For this price we really expected it to be a lot better. If we had both gotten the regular menu we would have felt better since those prices ranged from 1,800 to 5,000 yen. Kobe beef was 8x more expensive and tasted maybe...

Although we have waited 15-20 minutes to be seated, it is totally worth it. The food was very delicious and the portions were quite reasonable. Quality/price perspective, definitely my recommendation. My rating from last year was very good. Unfortunately my last visit from yesterday, was a bit unsatisfactory. The food was good as usual, thanks to that. But the service staff was a bit unkind :( l experience such behavior for the first time in my life.
