駒札: 誓願寺 天智天皇六年(667)、天皇の勅願により創建された。本堂の阿弥陀如来坐像は賢問子(けんもんし)・芥子国(けしこく)〔親子〕の作であった。もとは奈良にあったが、鎌倉初期に京の一条小川(現・上京区元誓願寺通小川西入)に移転し、その後、天正十九年(1591)に豊臣秀吉の寺町整備に際して現在地に移された。 その当時は、京都有数の巨刹の規模を有し、表門は寺町六角に面し、裏門は三条通に北面し、境内地六千五百坪には多数の伽藍を有し、十八ヶ寺の山内寺院を擁していた。 清少納言、和泉式部、秀吉の側室・松の丸殿が帰依したことにより、女性往生の寺としても名高い。また源信僧都は、当寺にて善財講を修し、一遍上人も念仏賦算を行った。浄土宗元祖の法然上人が興福寺の蔵俊(ぞうしゅん)僧都より当寺を譲られて以降、浄土宗になったという。現在は、法然上人の高弟・西山(せいざん)上人善恵房證空(ぜんねぼうしょうくう)の流れをくむ浄土宗西山深草派の総本山である。 (現地駒札より) Piece card: Seiganji Temple It was founded in the 6th year of Emperor Tenchi (667) by the imperial request of the emperor.
