Sushi Kyoto Sora — Restaurant in Kyoto

The best sushi I’ve ever had - and I’m not a sushi fan! I would never have had the pleasure of this omakase were it not for a couple of Japanese nurses who helped me navigate a clinic when I had a health concern while on my vacation. They were sweet enough to treat my boyfriend and I to this omakase. The chef and waitress were very welcoming and I was surprised that they accommodated our orders by asking if we wanted wasabi or not. They also gave the option of swapping out pieces if we didn’t enjoy them - but that wasn’t necessary.

My favorite were the salmon, fatty tuna, salmon roe (not pictured) and fresh bonito, but everything was fantastic. The urchin was my least favorite but at no fault of anyone - it’s just a flavor and texture that I don’t agree with. Everything was clearly very fresh and seasoned to perfection - I’m not kidding. It was so good. My boyfriend has eaten far more sushi than I have and even he was blown away. His favorite was the squid and he also said it was the first time that the urchin was enjoyable for him. A testament to the freshness of the product.

So glad we came here and the next time we’re in Japan we’ll return to Kyoto if not only for this sushi...

What can I say about the Omakase experience here. It was like watching a beautiful happy man dance and play with you food before delicately placing right in front of you to finish the job. Sushi Kyoto Sora is a 11/10 experience from start to finish. We did a 15 piece nigiri experience and had the recommended Sake along for the ride.

Watching everything front row. It was like I was a naughty naughty boy watching everything go down. The delicacy taken when putting everything together looked effortless. The flavours were full and everything went perfectly. That was until it came to the Idiot Fish. This is some deep sea rockfish. The placement in front and instruction to wait left me intrigued to what was next. He then pulled out a bright red burning rod of coal or something and seared the stupid out of that idiot fish leaving flavour for days. This was my outstanding one. And that is to say there 13 more that were so close.

This whole experience was topped off by a lovely hostess we chatted with throughout.

I cannot recommend this...

This was our favorite experience in Kyoto! It was recommended to us by a young lady working at the hotel we stayed at. She even made the reservation for us, letting chef know it was my birthday, which led to a nice surprise. The entire experience was such a delight! The hostess was attentive, polite and friendly. We enjoyed learning about her travels and her work. She speaks English fluently. The space is small, as to be expected, and seats are limited. I felt lucky to celebrate here.

We did the Omakase Nigiri Course and received a fresh, expertly crafted assortment of fine fish and crustaceans. It was all exquisite. The idiot fish was my favorite bite but the omelette bite at the end was also very memorable. It was really all very good. I normally do not like clams but I really enjoyed this preparation. Watching chef masterfully clean the anchovy in front of us was so neat. The host recommended some great sake and kept our drinks full and at the end I even received a little birthday treat.
