Tanoshimi — Restaurant in Kyoto

I thoroughly enjoyed my night at Tanoshimi. We didn’t have to book or wait to be served. I used my iPhone camera to translate the menu to order food as the owner didn’t speak too much English (albeit did a great job of trying). I had vegetable salad, fried squid, sashimi and the starter they served us on entrance. We were served a selection of 4 different sakes the owner made himself. Was absolutely delicious and very much cherished the experience we had here.

My only negative comment is that another customer started chain smoking - so we left earlier than we would have stayed otherwise.

Highly recommend this restaurant for delicious food and sake. The owner makes his own sake and chose the different types of Sake for us to try. It came with an appetizer size of various items: pickled chicken, fish and vegetables. We ordered the fried squid, corn, cheese spring roll and yam and they were all so tasty we ended up ordering more of the corn and squid. There are no English menus and the owner spoke little English but was so helpful and friendly and we used Google translate to read the menu. It was a bit hard to find located on the 2nd floor but so glad we found it as dining here was one of the highlights of our trip....

If I could give the service more than 5 stars I would. The warmest and friendliest chef and server ever encountered. They do not speak much English and there are no English menus but it is still extremely worth your while to go and use a translation app. The sake is made by the owner and is delicious. The environment is lively, fellow patrons all friendly and the food was all high quality and excellent. Nothing but positive words to say about this...
