No fresh food! It’s another chain of soulless bakeries which do not bake themselves but do pretend that they sell fresh food.
Great place from the outside, it has a hidden outdoor patio in the back which is very cute. But the food is very disappointing. The croissant just wasn’t fresh at all, was very very dry, obviously baked too long and without enough butter and tasted as a leftover from the day before.
The coffee was ok, but all in all a very disappointing experience at a place which looks very tempting and calls itself a bakery. Just do make sure, when calling yourself so, that your baked goods are fresh and tasty.
All in all, wouldn’t recommend this place. Coffee is thus okayish (not special) but the fact that you can enjoy it sitting in the garden in the middle of the city is a big plus.
However, final verdict: it’s a tourist trap. A chain which operates multiple ‘bakery’ cafés which work standarised, meaning it’s not a bakery, it’s all mass produced somewhere on the outskirts of the city solely to make money. It misses soul and a...
Read moreThe City Bakery in Kyoto is a haven for coffee and baked goods enthusiasts. Nestled in a cozy atmosphere, this coffee shop has a straightforward but incredibly well-executed menu. The oatmeal raisin cookie is a standout, offering the right amount of sweetness and chewiness—simply addictive. Equally impressive is the salmon bagel. The quality of the salmon is excellent, and it pairs wonderfully with the fresh, chewy bagel.
As for the coffee, it's fine—nothing extraordinary, but it does the job, providing a decent accompaniment to the delicious food items. The staff are attentive, making sure that you're well-taken care of during your visit.
All in all, The City Bakery is a delightful spot to unwind and indulge in some high-quality eats. Whether you're a local or just passing through Kyoto, make sure to stop by and...
Read moreExcellent baked goods. Tried the chocolate babka, black sesame seed bagel, scone, blueberry corn muffin. Bagel was perfectly what a bagel should be. Corn muffin was like what I used to get in the west.
The only perplexing incident was the lady who served me at around 11a.m or so on Monday, 16 December 2024. I ordered 5 bagels & a blueberry corn muffin on this day. Her face changed from stoic, to begin with, to one of annoyance and irritation with a bit of side eye. May I know if there is some sort of protocol in Kyoto or City Bakery that my order is questionable? Is it not polite for 1 person to order 5 bagels? Is only 1 item of 1 kind allowed to be bought per person. I realise Japanese etiquette is important so perhaps whoever reads this can enlighten me for when I next...
