Wagyu Tempura Izakaya KYOTO GATTEN — Restaurant in Kyoto

We stumbled into Izakaya Kyoto-Gatten when it was completely empty — but by the time we left, it was packed. That alone says something about the quality of the food!

The tempura was outstanding — clearly the work of a skilled tempura chef. The control of oil temperature was spot on; everything was light, crisp, and never greasy. The tempura chicken with miso and beef skewers were both delicious, but the surprise highlight for us was the deep-fried daikon. It was unbelievably juicy and flavorful — something so simple done so well.

The place has a relaxed, casual vibe and a menu full of comforting dishes that can satisfy all kinds of cravings. Whether you’re after skewers, fried food, or just a fun night out with great food and drinks, this spot delivers.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a laid-back but seriously tasty...

A lovely place to take a break from the crowds outside and enjoy a delicious lunch with a great range of drinks. The loaded sushi not only looks amazing but it is very delicious. It was very thoughtful that the rolls underneath are actually 8 small cucumber maki, so it makes it very easy to eat without creating a huge mess (I initially thought it was 4 overloaded gunkan) The tempura is excellent, crispy and not oily at all- the dipping sauce is so good! Vinegary and spicy which is very different to the regular style. The best part of our experience was definitely the service - English speaking and also so friendly, helpful and cheerful. I came here for lunch because the place I was trying to go turned out to be reservation only. This restaurant was next door and good reviews on Google so my partner and I decided to try it.

My bf got a tempura set and I got their lunch special with tuna, ikura, and uni with tempura and hot soba. It was an additional 100 yen to replace miso soup with either cold or hot soba. The tempura set came out earlier and we had to wait awhile for my sashimi/tempura set, but my set did have a lot more elements to it.
