Extraordinary location, good breakfast, but dirty rooms.
Cons: Cleanliness: So this is the big part. This hotel is the dirtiest I've ever been in Japan (I've been mainly staying in business hotels like this one, so not really comparing with high end hotels). [1] I had to change room because the first room they gave me has black mold in the bathroom. I also saw hair on the bathroom wall [2] The new room was better, but still the bathroom has an unpleasant smell to it. There are also places that didn't get cleaned (behind the toilet), that I had to clean it myself. [3] there are a bunch of undescribed liquid marks on the carpet, which are really disgusting. [4] There are spider webs on the corner of the room, and since I stayed for 10 days, can confirm after 2 room cleanings the webs are still there [5] the room cleaning is not thorough at all. They do not wash cups or vacuum the floor. [6] The hotel policy says stick the "need cleaning" sign before 11 to have the room cleaned, but there is one time I did so (maybe at 10:50) ish, and come back with no cleaning done.
Beddings: The hotel uses bed sheets instead of duvet covers. While this is not uncommon in the US, this is the first time I've seen it in Japan. Personally I hate bed sheets as they move at night and are not so comfortable. This is extremely bad give the sheets are very small, and easily move. Every night I'm fighting to keep the sheets and bed sheets in place which caused I have bad sleep. They give you a blanket for extra warmth which I don't if it gets cleaned or not.
Towels: towels are really bad material, lint everywhere and the towels themselves are really thin.
Wifi: very slow, especially at night. I had to use my own data at most nights.
Pajama & slippers: the pajama material is kinda bad (I think it's all polyester), I have sensitive skin so I can not use it at all. The slippers are not single use, given the problem with cleaning, I feel a bit uncomfortable as I don't trust they get cleaned well.
Laundry: laundry is pretty cheap, but while I've been staying, only 1 of the 3 dryers is working, the other 2 are broken. Also the washing machines and dryers are both very old models.
Windows: windows are all tinted, so you can not see outside at all. You can only crack the window for safety reasons.
Hand soap: there's not hand soap provided, which is surprising given we went through the whole covid thing..
Pros: Location: You can't find a better location in Kyoto. Pretty much all metro and buses pass Shijo Kawaramachi, and you are 1 min walk away from the busiest area in Kyoto. A lot of shopping malls nearby and nice restaurant. The hotel itself is in a back alley so it's also pretty quiet.
Breakfast: good breakfast, served between 7-9 so be aware if you wake up late (like me).
Price: probably on the cheaper side for Kawaramachi
Other neural notes: Room size: Yes the room is small, but it is as expected for Japan, and especially for central Kyoto. However be aware that it is extremely small, to the point that I bump my knees when use the toilet, and the sink is so small I always splash water out. (I'm 5'6)
English: I will not expect anyone to be able to speak English (since this is not an English speaking country), but just be aware that the staff here can barely speak any English. Be prepared to used your translation apps.
I understand this is a really busy hotel, so cleaning can be challenging with the time constraints. But I would really suggest the hotel to thoroughly inspect the cleanliness of the room, and do not make unreal promises on cleaning if they could not be met.
I will not stay at this...
Read moreYears ago, I stayed a few nights at this Hotel, recently, I booked the same Hotel again!||||From Kawarmachi station, take EXIT 6 and when you come out to the main road, turn left and just before the 1st trafiic light, you will see an alley on your left (Takashimaya's entrance is on your road, across the road). Walk down the alley and you will see FAMILY MART on the left, walk up the road (from FAMILY MART) and within 2 minutes, you will see SUPER HOTEL on your left. Easy!||||Check in is strictly at 3pm. You can leave your luggage at the lobby, if you arrive earlier.||||What surprised me, this time, was that there was no room key or card. You need to key in some numbers to enter your room, like a password. I am not sure if this is a good system as it may not be so easy to remember the numbers. The front desk suggested I took a pictrure of the number. What if I lose my phone......?||||Anyway, the few nights stay turned out OK.||||The room was not big but OK for 2 people who just wanted a place to sleep. Having 2 big pieces of luggage could be quite a challenge though. The built-in bath & toilet is rather small and you really have to try to fit in, especially if you are quite big in size.||||We tried to watch some TV programmes but finally gave up as we could not find any English / Mandarin channels (mainly Japanese and 1 or 2 Korean channels). There was many Asian and Westerners staying in the Hotel and I was surprised that there was no English channel.||||The Hotel has natural hot spring bath that is FOC for guests but specific timing for ladies and men. Need to check the timing.||||The Hotel also provides free breakfast. To me , it was really nice to have breakfast provided and there was more than enough to eat. This is a PLUS point staying here.|| ||No check out was required. We only have to leave before 10am.||||To me, this Hotel is in a great location. Easy accessibility to shops, retsaurants and even to attractions. The famous NISHIKI Market is only a few minutes from the Hotel.||The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were professional and polite.||||Will I stay here...
