We were lucky enough to come on New Year Eve and got to try the NYE menu. The Zenzai was amazing and delicious. We also tried the Isobeyaki which was a revelation. The ginger milk was the cherry on the cake! We will definitely be back for the Ogura Toast!
Edit 1: Since the review, we have been back 3 times in a row. We cannot get enough of the Ogura toast. It is filled with high quality whole beans and was delicious! Not too sweet, perfectly balanced. The kinako butter was also an absolute revelation. It was insanely savoury and had an amazing texture. If possible, I liked the kinako butter more than the ogura red bean.
The sandwiches were also absolutely amazing. We had one with tuna mayo, pickled apples, fresh apples and green laver. This might be the best sandwich I ever had in my life. It had a perfect balance of sweet, sour and savoury. Even typing this is making my mouth water. We also loved the Isobe sandwich. It is simple in theory and amazing in execution, with mozzarella giving an epic cheese pull, flavour given by very good laver seaweed. I would say easily that Bucyo is one of the best breakfast places I’ve ever been to in my travels.
Edit 2: After several weeks in Japan, we have tried Zenzai from maybe 15 different shops, from roadside stalls to cafes and several tea houses. Nothing has come close to the sheer quality and perfect balance of the zenzai we...
Read moreTLDR, 10% foreigners fee disguised as a “service tax”. Dishonest and don’t agree with the way this is presented. Coffee is great and probably the only thing worth getting take out for.
Came here as I had a friend rave about this place. Though sadly it didn’t live up to its hype.
Firstly started off with a long line, arrived about 9:45 and only got in around 11am. So for those coming, expect a line.
Next off the ordering all foreigners are charged a 10% “service fee” which is totally a scam especially when you google translate the Japanese menu and it does NOT have it. I would rather it be up front and honest that there is a foreigners tax than to disguise it as a service tax. Rubs off as disingenuous and scammy. When we made our order, we had already changed our plans to order based off the 10:30 menu change, to only them be forced to order in the breakfast menu and not the lunch menu despite it being clearly 11am already.
Finally, quality of the food was alright, I’d say on par with the other chains. The peanut butter toast was nice and unique and coffee I would say on of the best ones in Nagoya.
If I were to come next time, I’d just get coffee take out and call it there. Certainly not wasting my time and money especially on...
Read moreThe nutty and rich kinako butter toast trumps ogura toast, but I’m very much partial to kinako; adzuki is too sweet for me.
It took us about an hour to get seated after putting our name down at 08:00 on a Saturday. Because it’s so busy, parties of two need to share a four-seater table, but they put a screen up between you for privacy.
Be aware that you may be refused entry if your perfume or cologne is too strong. You can read about the rest of the rules when you get there, or check out the photos others have posted.
Furthermore, as a bare minimum, everyone needs to order a drink, which comes with plain toast and butter at no extra cost. For those rare individuals who don’t typically like coffee or tea (me), there are plenty of other options available. My hot almond milk was rather delightful.
Was the wait worth it? I’m uncertain. The toast was definitely decadent, but it wasn’t life changing. Perhaps if you bought some kinako powder, you could make the paste yourself at home. It was good to try this place once, but I wouldn’t endure the...
