Stayed at the Hilton (Genji is inside, upstairs), and Genji was a pretty convenient dinner spot for a long day to grab dinner with our group for some teppanyaki. Having been to really high quality teppanyaki places, I had a high bar set.
The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the chef at our table was great. Absolutely no complaints there.
Unfortunately the food was just ok, and I have had far better Teppanyaki at small local places in town in both Nagoya and Tokyo.
The real issue bringing this down to 2 stars is the insane cost for this place. It's easily over 10,000 yen per person. Anyone sitting at the table must order something, I think they would make you leave if you said no too many times to the repeated ask of "well you need to order something to..." (I'm sure the hotel requires it to keep the revenue up I suppose). There are some pre-fix options ranging from 75,000 to 200,000+ - which have some appetizers and a small desert dish + meat and fish on the grill, or a la cart which is actually a lot more expensive if you go that route. Tap water is not an option, it's 6,000 yen for a small bottle, ~ 8 oz.
Anyway, you see the point, you go in and feel like you're nickle and dimed, and the food doesn't stand up to that cost. Next time we will be going out on the town no matter how tired we are =).
The Hilton hotel itself is a great place to stay though, just skip this restaurant...
Read moreLast September our family trip from Seoul, Korea in 2024, we had the pleasure of dining at Genji, an exceptional Japanese restaurant located inside the Nagoya Hilton. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with a warm and elegant atmosphere, seamlessly blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern sophistication.
Led by the talented Chef Masashi Hisada, Genji delivers an authentic and refined Japanese dining experience. We opted for the omakase sushi platter, which showcased the freshest seasonal seafood, each piece carefully crafted and bursting with delicate flavors. The wagyu beef teppanyaki was another standout—cooked to perfection on the teppan grill, with a buttery texture and deep umami richness that made every bite unforgettable.
The restaurant also offers an impressive selection of beer and Japanese teas, perfectly complementing the meal. The service was impeccable, with the staff providing detailed explanations of each dish while ensuring our comfort throughout the evening.
Genji at Nagoya Hilton is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic and luxurious Japanese dining experience. Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or a first-time visitor to Japan, Chef Masashi Hisada’s culinary mastery will leave a lasting impression. We will definitely return on our next...
Read moreThe best Teppanyaki experience we’ve ever had! We had one of their sets and it was all delicious, end to end. The quality of the beef was just excellent - I don’t think it was A5 we had, but it tasted buttery and had so much of that rich beefy flavor all the same. The chef also used the beef fat to fry up the vegetables, adding another layer of flavor to the dish. What was unique was he got us to sandwich the vegetables in between slices of bread that had gone on the grill too, “like Japanese taco!” he excitedly told us. Loved...
