The shop is located in an old building. Kitakaro is originally known all over Japan for its big selection of Baumkuchen (recommended!). But my best surprise here, was the soft cream. I tried so many in Otaru (all over Japan to be honest...) but Kitakaro soft cream became my favorite. The texture is incredibly soft and they add the perfect amount of sugar so that you can fully enjoy the taste of milk. I loved it so much that I have been eating at least one each day during my stay... If you are a soft cream lover, don't miss this one ! Another good surprise: they have many kinds of cream puff but the one that really caught my attention is pretty unusual. They call it ピスコット. The puff itself has this kind of "mochi mochi" texture and is whiter than the usual puffs. I really enjoyed it and It seems to be a best seller because it is really often sold out. If you like cream puffs, you should definitely try this one...
Read moreThis shop is always very crowded. The cream puffs were sold out by noon on a weekday!!!
The madeleine are good here and 150yenish... Good ingredients. I wasn't a fan of the baumkuchen. It's just like baumkuchen-shaped poundcake.
My favorite is this, pictured below. Dacquoise sandwich with rich buttercream. Good proper ingredients, a delightful harmony of praline, hazelnut, maple sugar. 150yen. Warning: it's very sweet. Incredibly delicious but sweet!
The staff in Otaru didn't seem to speak English but could communicate somehow with all the demanding foreign customers. Even though they were stressed out and busy, they were polite and helpful.
The gentleman staff at the Sapporo airport shop was very cheerful and friendly. This item pictured was sold out in Otaru but I could find it at the...

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a mix of European and Japanese charm. Their fresh cream products, like the custard-filled puff pastries, are a must-try. Many visitors also enjoy their gift-worthy treats, such as cookies and cakes, which are perfect souvenirs.
Although it can be crowded, especially during weekends, the quality of the desserts and the friendly service make it a worthwhile stop for anyone with a...
