Sapporo Classic
Located in the charming city of Otaru, this is a sushi restaurant that stands out from the rest. As I walked out of the restaurant at around 7:20 pm, I felt the warmth of the restaurant's lights shining on the snowy streets, which were now empty except for the occasional pedestrian walking by. The sound of the staff bidding me farewell as I left further solidified my dining experience as a memorable one. I couldn't help but think to myself, "I'm glad I came, it was really great."
Going back to the beginning of my experience, upon confirming my reservation at the counter, I was led to a four-person seating area. As soon as I sat down, a series of greetings were exchanged, though I didn't understand much of the Japanese spoken, it still felt welcoming. The last greeting, which I could tell came from the kitchen, was particularly memorable.
Sharing the warm atmosphere of the restaurant with us were two tables of English-speaking foreigners who had ordered similar dishes to ours - three-color rice bowl and seafood rice bowl, accompanied by the must-have local beer of Hokkaido. We all eagerly awaited the arrival of our food.
The steaming hot chawanmushi was so hot that it made me forget about the cold weather outside. The chestnuts inside were a delightful surprise, just sweet enough to leave a pleasant taste in my mouth. The scallops were undoubtedly a Hokkaido specialty, and the sushi rolls were garnished with minced green onions, grated ginger, or the incredibly flavorful "wasabi."
But the most surprising dish was the translucent salmon roe, which burst with freshness in my mouth, taking me by surprise.
The local beer of Otaru had a unique taste, but personally, I still preferred the Sapporo Classic, which I had ordered every day during my stay in Hokkaido.
From the reservation process to the meal, and even when leaving the restaurant, everything was a wonderful experience. If I had the chance, I would definitely come back again to this sushi...
Crazy value for money during lunch. This whole set cost 3300Yen. Includes 5 nigiri, chawanmushi and soup on top of the donburi.
Went weekday 12pm and was able to grab a counter seat immediately. Service was polite and quick. Food came out just as fast.
Only marks down for service since I was not given tea or a towel. Also the waitress got my order wrong despite me deliberately pointing and saying in Japanese which set I wanted. However they were quick to rectify it so all good.
Oh and get the kani jiru, it's hair crab and will probably be the cheapest hair crab you'll get at...
Read moreAs fresh as it gets, as friendly as the chefs and service staff can be.. Comparing the price to a few doors down, this is well more reasonable.
With a seat at the counter, the chefs ensure we are ok, whether we want more tea, wasabi, or if we need any thing else.. The restaurant was busy by the way..
Set A was ¥3300, but i have a crab salad, soup, chawanmushi, 5 pieces of sushi, and a...
