We enjoyed our meal so much we ate here both nights we were in Takayama!
The first night my husband and I each had the assorted Hida-Beef combo plate so we were able to try all three cuts of beef. The salad was fabulous and my husband cleared his plate quickly. He doesn’t like salad very much, so this is saying something! The appetizer consisted of a sampling of a variety of items, including a ratatouille, a sliver of quiche, and three meats. I honestly wouldn’t have ordered any of these items for myself had I seen them on a menu, but man would I have missed out! They were so dang tasty, we once again cleaned our plates. We also received some bread, a small ramekin of a tasty French onion soup, and a side of rice.
Each of the Hida-beef cuts came with a pickled slaw, similar to sauerkraut, but all different, a veggie, and a bit of mashed potatoes. The meat was fantastic and melt in your mouth tender. Normally I love filet, but the cheaper cuts, ichicbo and rump, were superb.
Both nights our son ordered the cheeseburger and throughly enjoyed it. The Hida beef flavor came through in the patty and wasn’t overwhelmed by the cheese flavor. The dish came with French fries, which were so tasty, we ordered an extra plate of them our second night to share.
Our second night I ordered the rump combo and my husband ordered the ichibo. The meal was just as fab as the night prior and we are so happy to have these wonderful meals as part of our memories from our stay in Takayama.

Burger (2200) The burger is really a miss. Just not enough meat for the price. It’s stuffed with lettuce, huge chunks of onion and large tomato and a small portion beef patty and some cheese. No wow factor just very average.
The beef (9900) we got was incredible. All very tender and melt in your mouth. The combo comes with a salad, rice or bread, and then a plate of starts with a slice of quiche, deli meats, small Shepard pie and some pate. It’s a steep price for the beef but quality is there.

Premium Hida beef served with a level of perfection and care that will take you by surprise. The chef's attention to detail will be obvious the moment the dish is placed in front of you. We tried the rump steak and it combined with the balsamico sauce and mashed potato perfectly. And wrapping up the fabulous dinner with a delicious tiramisu was just what we needed. Rarely do places like these live up to the hype. But Butcher's doesn't just live up to the hype, it goes a step further and sends you home thinking of when you can come back for another round! The staff is also extremely friendly and they go the extra mile to make sure that their guests have absolutely nothing to be unhappy about. So in short, this is a must try for anyone coming to Takayama. You will not regret...
