Taiheikaku — Restaurant in Takayama

Third day in Takayama. Have struggled to find a dinner restaurant. Was walking back to hotel mid-afternoon when we had a detailed look at the menu (outside the door) for this place. Was clearly varied. Various Ramen, rice, noodles, and Chinese main courses. Different options around Gyozo and soup for appetizers. Ventured back that evening to find only two other patrons dining. The gentleman operating the restaurant was clearly the cook, waiter, dish-washer etc and therefore a little busy. Nevertheless, we had a great, cheap meal. Only wish we had found this place on day 1.

A fantastic small no-frills operation that takes pride and produces good quality meals. We ordered gyoza, a ramen, a pork dish with rice and a large bottle of Kirin for under Y3000.

Went to this place with my family as a lot of other places were closed and this was close to our hotel. Only the owner doing everything, very friendly and speaks enough English to understand orders. Menue is cheap and food is great, feels like home. Restersunt has a very slight scent of kerosene however this is due to the heater keeping the place nice and cosy. We were lucky to find this restaurant as a great change from seeing Hida Beef advertised at almost every other restaurant in Takayama. After walking for about 30 minutes and finding everywhere full for lunch we found this place next to our hotel. It looks a bit run down inside but the owner is doing an excellent job cooking and serving. We enjoyed lunch set meal, gyoza one and teriyaki pork one.
