Eggs'n Things is a very nice distraction from the hustle of Harajuku.
Recessed down one of many side streets in the area, this eatery towers over its neighboring competitors with two floors including a moderately sized outdoor patio.
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by a hostess outside who spoke excellent English. Honestly though while that is cool, it's not all that necessary. Most places you go to they do a solid job of catering to non Japanese speaking foreigners. But as a fact of note here it was comforting even though we did attempt to respond in Japanese lol.
The ambiance: We were led upstairs to a well spaced, sunny, contemporary dining area. There were a few other folks here already at this early hour since Eggs'n Things is one of few eateries in Harajuku that open before 1030am.
Then once we were seated, and given water, our waiter and the menus where given to us. Omg the menu, despite being in Japanese, had tons of pictures for each dish. however they did have an English menu version which made it easier to understand the accompaniment for each dish option.
This menu was amazing. Options for just about any sort of brunch dish you could think of. However, the only thing I wanted was blueberry pancakes which they so happen to have.
Soon after we placed our order, the food came out. The presentation: The pancake and waffle items we ordered looked brilliant. Both were very nicely plated and looked quite tasty. One thing that stood out however was the huge tower of light whipped cream topped with ginger bits on top. yeah that did me in.
The Taste: Despite what you may think, the super fluffy and airy whipped cream didn't over power the pancakes at all. I was definitely full after finishing it but I didn't feel like I needed a nap or was about to explode. The ginger bits where a solid juxtaposition of taste with the sweetness of the whipped cream along with the savory taste of the blueberries atop the pancakes. while I much prefer the blueberries literally in the pancake rather than atop it, its still tasted fine and the blueberries had more of a fresh taste.
This place gets top marks for all three categories and will certainly return here again. I would very much recommend this place to anyone visiting harajuku and a spot to eat.
Note: this place is super popular amongst the locals as well and gets busy usually after the 11am hour. So...
Read moreTL;DR - Don't come here unless you're a tourist with young children & if food quality doesn't matter.
I'm shocked that this place has 4-stars and the other reviews speak highly of it - we had a few dishes between sweet & savory - and it was terrible. It makes me question the legitimacy of the other reviewers with 1-5 reviews on Google.
This is not a tourist trap, but a whipped cream trap.
SERVICE: The menu is in English, but none of the staff spoke any of it (which isn't bad nor warrants removing stars). The main issue with the service was the speed - it was slow and the waiter didn't seem to care. Many of the other clientele were flagging them down and returning food, so it was a bad sign for service.
FOOD: The pancakes are ok, but not worth going if you consider the cons of this place. Way overpriced for what it was as well.
I got the eggs benedict - I received it as the benny was not running (the egg was over hard, not easy with the runny egg). Other tables had the same issue. I sent it back to be corrected, and the second time it was corrected but way undercooked and took nearly 35 minutes to get the new one.
We also got the omelet - which had so much oil on it that we felt the US was going to invade it. It looked nasty I didn't even try it.
The only good thing was the potatoes, which were crunchy and soft inside.
OVERALL: Avoid traps like these, Harajuku has far...
Read moreIt is quite difficult to put into words, but they do offer a few really good things whilst some others might disappoint you a lot. So, for positive side, they have fantastic savory crepes and the seasonal chestnut latte was also suitable. When now going to the other end of food, the shrimp was mediocre and the sweet pancake was total disappointment as it was overly dry albeit having such a tower of whipped cream on top. Service wasn't much either as for first, they kept people waiting outside in hot Japanese summer with many seats still available. The air conditioning on the second floor was broken, but many, including me, decided to still tolerate it. They never seemed to ask more than 2 groups of they're fine with it or not and intentionally kept half of the tables empty, leaving you wondering if they actually want any business. Now, for some other disappointing elements, the restrooms were dirty and smelly, looking like they didn't really care about it. There was also a significant amount of mold and the hand drier was taped up. Those facilities need urgent renovation to be used. Do, as a conclusion, I would give 1.5 stars, yet Google didn't have half stars, so I will be generous and...
