Kaiseki restaurant Akasaka Tan tei — Restaurant in Tokyo

Wow. Picked this place for date night with my husband based on a search for kaiseki in my neighborhood. I'd never tried Okinawan food before so it sounded interesting. I called and was able to make a reservation (in Japanese) the day of and requested a course without meat. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived that everyone seemed to be in private rooms. We started with drinks and I started with awamori, an Okinawan liquor on the rocks. The meal itself consisted of nine courses and while the first few came out quickly, the meal took about 3 hours total. Later we switched to nihonshu (Dassai and Hakkaisan). As expected with kaiseki, each dish was a work of art featuring seasonal ingredients. Our menu for the courses was all in Japanese so I didn't understand 100%, but many of the vegetables, fruit, and fish were from Okinawa.

The interior and decor were really cool and charming with details like a stone path in the hallway, lots of natural wood, and walls with straw mixed in. The servers all wore kimonos and the service was, of course, top notch.

My wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary, and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. We were seated in a beautiful private room, which immediately made the evening feel intimate and special. We experienced their set "Kakyu course", which was a true journey through the rich nature of Okinawa. Every single dish was a masterpiece, but the highlights for us were the incredibly tender Akasaka-Tantei Original Braised Pork and the exquisite Grilled Wagyu. Each dish was so thoughtfully prepared, with such a wonderful expression of Okinawa. Fresh ingredients, paired artfully, with elegant plating.
