A true standout taco restaurant/bar that every taco lover in Tokyo should visit. In my opinion, it's the best taco spot in the city.
The menu features unique tacos not commonly found in Tokyo, such as Mole, Oaxaca cheese, and Cactus (Nopales). I highly recommend the Tankaku gyu taco, which is a fantastic meaty taco, though the Gyutan taco is also available for those looking for a premium experience (2500 yen). If you're on a budget, the avocado taco is the cheapest option at 450 yen. The soft tacos are freshly made in-house, which really elevates the experience.
Beyond tacos, I really enjoyed the Chilaquiles with avocado and eggs, which was great with chicharrón. Other traditional Mexican dishes like Pozole, Tamales, and Tlacoyo are also on the menu. For a unique drink, be sure to try the creamy warm Apple Atole.
They also offer an Omakase morning set for 3150 yen.
The staff is very friendly, but be prepared to wait for a seat as the place is popular. Seating includes 5 counter seats and 5 tables with 10 seats, accommodating a maximum party of 6.
Overall, a must-visit for authentic, high-quality tacos and a great...
Read moreComing from Southern California, I had my reservations that tacos in Tokyo could be done in a way that would make me reconsider my life decisions standing at a taco truck on Figueroa late at night as being the prototypical home of great tacos. Consider myself “reconsidered.”
The environment/atmosphere is distinctively Japanese in elegance and design, so whiffs of blue corn tortillas cooking on the griddle are a sensory surprise. Starting with an iced blue corn tea, I knew that this wasn’t going to just be good, but like REALLY good. Then the 5 taco breakfast omakase paid perfect homage to its Mexican roots with unique Japanese ingredients and flavors. The carnitas special might be the greatest taco I’ve ever had. They did carnitas better than anywhere else. And I say that without hesitation. It’s nuts, frankly.
Overall, Los Tacos Azules did exactly what I wanted it to - it gave me Japanese experience while never straying from Mexican influence.
So, yeah. I recommend this...
Read moretl;dr: 6/10 for someone with decent amount of experience with mexican food in mexico & the states. Perhaps it’s not bad if you’re looking for japanese style tacos or prefer foods with lighter flavors.
We ordered 5 tacos (egg, carnitas special, cauliflower, etc.) The ingredients were cooked well and the tortillas were great. The carnitas taco was probably my fav. But to me, the tacos were at varying degrees of underseasoned. It’s also disappointing that they didn’t have any hot sauce. Salsas were okay, flavors also on the lighter side.
Half way through the meal, I had to adjust my expectations to think that they make japanese tacos inspired by mexicao, and I was able to enjoy the food a bit more.
We also ordered Guac, Tlayoco and Quesadilla. Overall I was a bit disappointed by the lack of flavor, too. This might be a bit harsh but I thought the Quesadilla tasted like one of those breakfast wraps you could get at Dunkin in...
