Visit here before eating in any other Japanese restaurant. I wish I had.
I came across Reona Sushi having seen it as recently opened and reading just how positive the reviews were. I was in Japan for a research trip and despite eating in lots of restaurants, I realised I didn’t actually know as much about the food itself as I wanted to. This felt like a good decision.
From the moment I arrived, the warmth and attentiveness of the team made this feel less like a meal and more like an experience with friends. Moemi, Fujito and Kein delivered one of the most memorable dining experiences I’ve had in Japan. The balance between educational and being a great dining experience is very intelligent. Moemi is really impressive as a host and guide and the skills of Chef Fujito were perfect.
The team spoke perfect English and shared a wealth of knowledge, offering rich insight into the history of Tokyo dining culture and the traditions behind sushi. From the provenance of the fish to the intricacies of wasabi preparation and the subtle differences between sushi rice varieties, every detail was presented with care, clarity and genuine passion. It was seriously fascinating and insightful. They were so happy to answer my questions and I felt so comfortable and welcome as a solo diner.
I’ve dined in countless Japanese restaurants and I can confidently say Reona Sushi is truly special. Whether you’re a newcomer to sushi or an enthusiast who’s dined in the top sushi restaurants, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the craft. The sushi itself was some of the best I’ve eaten in the last 5 weeks of being in Japan. I don’t want to share too much information not to spoil your own experience.
This will be my top recommendation for any international visitor to Tokyo. It’s not just a place to eat; it’s a place to learn and savour the very best of Japanese culinary excellence. Book it early before there’s a waiting list as this place will be one of the most popular restaurants to book....
Read moreSo maybe California just has great Japanese food or perhaps the people rating restaurants on Google don't know what good Japanese food tastes like. All the 4.9s led us to tourist traps with mediocre food. We had better food in 3.9s. Having just a few days left we thought we'd try something touted as the best and WOW! Wrangling a crying baby and a hyperactive 9 year old in a country known for conformity has been stressful. Because of Reona's small seating we had the place to ourselves. They currently only do two seatings per day. When they say it's an experience they mean it. I have been around sushi my whole life and I learned a lot during the presentation periods of the service. They say you will know more about sushi than most Japanese people by the end. The sushi was unlike any I have ever had. A touch of yuzu on sea bream? You could taste the essence in your nose, light and delicate. The chef grinds the wasabe in front of you from a fresh plant and it's unlike any I have ever had, even those that claimed they were made of real wasabi. And any questions you have can be asked at any time. They also allow pictures and recording, even encourage it. They also did numerous a/b tests to show you the difference between fresh fish and preserved or low quality fish. And the sake pairing was great. I was more drunk than I have ever been but I was clear headed and no hangover. Our hostess said she picked the selections herself and each choice was served in a different glass and carafe. This is a truly unlimited service and I ended up asking for more of their plum wine over and over and will be searching for it today as well as searching for their knife maker in...
Read moreI genuinely enjoyed my time at Reona. It was a great great honor to be the first guest here! When I first entered Reona and guided to the seat, I saw this cute little name tag with warm greeting. We all know how such detail makes a big difference.
As well written at the reservation website, staffs at Reona could speak English very well which took my first omakase experience to a whole new level. Whenever I visit high-end restaurant abroad, I always wished I could speak the language and ask questions and interact with staff/chef. At Reona, thanks to the staffs who all speak English fluently, I could easily ask questions and express my gratitude without any language barrier.
The omakase was beyond the best. The chef first showed me the fish(ingredient) of today and walked me through the shari preparation. They had two different type of wasabi and I had a chance to taste the authentic one, with a very rich flavor. 14 course of sushi was so entertaining and informative. Reona also has a 2-3min video played in between the course, which helped me understand the history and details of sushi as a gourmet. You must come and have this holistic experience — it’s not like any other omakase place, I promise!
Last but not least, Reona prepared an authentic dessert paired with Sakura Tea. Staffs told me Sakura Tea is only served in Japanese traditional wedding, so as a foreigner with almost no chance to be invited in Japanese wedding, I think it’s safe to say Reona would be the best opportunity to try out this traditional & amusing dessert.
I cannot express all the happiness from this amazing restaurant. Please come and try out if you want to experience the perfect omakase...
