I've tried three times to eat at this restaurant (first time I walked in off the street and there were no available seats and the second time they were closed for the New Years holidays) but the third time was the charm all thanks to making a reservation (online reservations are available and easy to complete).
Sushi Oishi is located in a fairly lively part of town near the Hamamatsucho JR Station, you pass busy izakayas and other restaurants on your way there. But the second you step into this small, six seat sushi bar, the hectic world outside melts away. Everything about this restaurant is clean and inviting and soft music plays while the chef, Takashi Imai, greets you warmly and show you to your seat.
This place is all about details: a small origami piece sits on your plate as a welcoming token, the warm cloth oshibori that is handed to you carries a faint citrus scent that is clearly a personal touch of the establishment, and the chef will even wipe away excess sauce from your sushi platter as to not affect the flavor experience of pieces that come later. It's the small things that matter when it comes to an omakase dining experience like this and Sushi Oishi ensures that no detail is over looked.
The food itself is beyond description. Only by actually eating it can you fully appreciate how good it is. Simple, high quality ingredients are transformed in front of your eyes into culinary works of art by a practiced hand. The best available fish at the market that day is served to you with only the most basic of additions (rice, wasabi, maybe some rock salt and a few brush strokes of soy sauce) to let the natural flavors and freshness of the seafood tantalize your palette with various levels of decadence and umami. This is omakase at its finest. A master artist creating masterpieces with only his hands and a sharp blade.
I cannot recommend Sushi Oishi enough. The food is amazing, the sake selection goes perfectly with the meal, the cozy ambiance of the restaurant itself is inviting and Takashi-san is a wonderful host. I am certainly glad I finally got a chance to eat here and I most definitely will be...

I loved at the end the chef asked if we wanted anymore plates. I couldn’t resist and even asked him to make me a surprise. What he came up with was out of this world tasty.

Read moreWe booked a dinner at Sushi Oishi for a Saturday night. It's parked in a nondescript corner, but a cosy haven once you are in. It is relatively small, only seats 6-8 pax. Thought has gone into every little detail, down to the little origami figurine placed on each placemat. Chef Imai takes pride in his craft and takes care to ask for each patron's preferences (I was with someone who disliked wasabi and was her first time having omakase - for the record, she absolutely loved every bite).
Every course was thoughtfully prepared. For the cooked dishes, I was especially impressed by the tuna cheek, gently simmered with radish, as well as the clam chawanmushi. The sushi spoke for itself. Loved the meihikari (hard to find in Singapore), chutoro, otoro, shrimp, anago, and of course, the absolute standout, the uni handroll.
Dinner was decently priced, at top notch quality. It...
