So far, DevilCraft is probably my favorite place to go for craft beer around Tokyo. They have a good selection of beers, both of their own making as well as selections from around the world. I only had two from their broad range (around 20 on tap if I recall correctly) but I was happy to have so many choices. The only bad thing about the beer was that at the time I went they did have much in the way of darker, heavier beers like porters or stouts. I imagine this was more a matter of timing than a normal issue.
With regards to good, I was once again not disappointed. Their main focus is deep dish pizza, but they have a broader selection of American style bar food like nachos and hot wings. I personally went with the chili cheese waffle fries and was not disappointed.
Were this restaurant located in America I would knock off a point for the price but the unfortunate reality is that good craft beer bars are pricier in Tokyo. That being said, compared to the local competitions the cost is generally on par if not a little better than some. The pizzas are pretty expensive, but Tokyo isn't exactly overflowing with Chicago style options. The rest of the menu seems pretty reasonably priced though.
All things considered, DevilCraft is a great option for craft beer...
Read moreIt deserves 5 stars and I'll tell you why: First, the pizza is really good. And ingredients are good quality. A special mention for the excellent herbs used (some fresh herbs, reminded me of one I had in Napoli- the real one, in Italy). But all this is not the only reason why it gets 5 stars. It gets 5 stars because the owner did his research, and instead of transferring the heavy dough recipe from Chicago (Chicago gets very cold winters, ok?), it adapted very smartly to the climate of Japan, which requires a "deep dish" much lighter in dough and calories. The pizza has a lovely light and "deep" pie, filled with a concoct of veggies, tomato sauce, some mozzarella and herbs- works really very well, with less calories of the pizza in Chicago at Pizzeria One or Two. The 5 star rating goes also for their extensive and somewhat creative list of home-brewed beers! We tried 3 of their beers, they were truly excellent. We are definitely going back to try others. They do have an extensive list of beer like I have not seen in Tokyo. Remarkable. I really hope they hold up...
Read moreWent for the pizza only. It was okay, but the crust felt off. It was crunchy to the point of being a bit tough which isn't really what I expect out of deep dish, which is normally slightly golden crisp on the outside and soft inside.
Also, for non-alcohol drinkers I had to buy a drink with my meal (which I didn't expect) so I paid 400 yen for a soft drink on top of the pretty expensive for its size pizza. (Think like the $4 Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas but sound 1200 yen instead). This ended up making the meal quite expensive for something that I only felt was okay. Maybe good for Japan but this kind of pizza wouldn't survive for a minute back home.
It seems like a place designed more for the craft beer crowd than genuine deep dish pizza fans, I can't particularly recommend it for the pizza alone. If you want to come for the craft beer it's not like it's still decent albeit a bit pricey.
Also pay close attention to the pizza ingredients for sauce as I didn't realize the pizza I got didn't...
