If you are looking for an omakase experience, avoid this at all costs. This was the only time I truly felt ripped off while in Japan.
As others have noted, the apathy of the staff towards the cleanliness of their workstations when handling the fish was troubling. The counter was littered and dirty, as was the clothing the staff wore. Additionally, while we were served by a sous chef, which is totally understandable, he continually used an iPad to try and show the fish he was preparing in English, and would use the device repeatedly whilst preparing dishes. Frankly, I was appalled.
Unfortunately, even worse was the meal itself. The appetizers came out so scalding they were impossible to eat. The fried dishes were cooked so deeply it was difficult to tell what they originally were. At one point the chef even made a show out of agitating the live shrimp and then skewering them in front of us, in some mediocre attempt to be humorous.
The nigiri were mostly adequate. Many of the fish were also heavily marinated, with several pieces just poorly constructed. Certainly not great, and definitely not worth an order of magnitude more than an average meal. As another reviewer noted, once all this wrapped up, the chef had the gall to inform me that the dessert was an upcharge, and that, oh, by the way, I ordered the mineral water, so we had to pay for 5 glasses of that too.
It can be hard to find the omakase experience you're after as a foreigner, but friend,...
Read moreAvoid this restaurant Bad food and rip-off for tourists! Most of their fish tasted bland. Sanma fish is in season but they used super strong sauce to cover its taste -was the fish not fresh enough? His soy sauce was too salty and he put too much soy sauce on each piece. The place was filthy in Japanese sushi restaurant standard, and I've never seen a sushi chef's outfit being so dirty with so much stains on it, which is the case for both sushi chefs there. At the end, they charged us 1,100 Yen each for the sorbert dessert which they never told us it was not included - they just told us this was a homemade dessert (which wasn't even good) and then charged onto the bill! Ridiculous! I've never had a 27k Yen omakase meal where dessert wasn't included!!! And same as another review, they kept asking us questions during the meal (not even close to the end) like where is your hotel, how are you going back - taxi or train? The whole experience felt like a total scam!!!! And above all, food was BAD, avoid...
Read moreOmakase in Japan is different than omakase anywhere else in the world. Sushiriku is also no exception to this.
Seating a total of 6 people per session is appreciated because there is not wait between servings and a cozy atmosphere. It’s a matter of personal preference, but I don’t like waiting a long time between each bite.
The Chef that helped us during lunch was friendly and focused. He also speaks limited English and we appreciated his effort in trying to talk to us :) Thank you for welcoming us despite our limited Japanese.
The fish here is different because it is aged and exactly what you would expect from omakase (as opposed to a regular sushi restaurant). The volume of our lunch meal was perfect. We left feeling perfectly satisfied without being too full. Our favorite had to be the aged chutoro marinated in soy sauce.
Also there is Sushi Riku and Shushiriko! Make sure you reserve and map yourself to the...
