Randomly decided to find a omakase sushi in shibuya on our last night in Tokyo and went to shibuya stream for sushi.
Well priced omakase at JPY9800 per pax. This place is always packed when I passed by a few times during lunch and dinner.
They serve a total of 20 courses of sushi and seafood, generous portion of food, service was not your usual uptight omakase restaurants, judging by the service staff, they even ask us to put out bags at the shop seating ledge which surprises us since will block the view of outside patrons nevertheless the sushi was fresh and we were so stuffed towards the end of the meal, took around 1.5 hours to finish the course and can go off for more shopping after chatting Shibuya.
Sashimi - love it, fresh & what you will expect.
Sushi - enoki sushi was interesting, the rest was very fresh and the first piece of sushi you will get is fatty tuna Otoro, they want to make sure you ate the best piece when you are famish & it taste like heaven with the fish melt in your mouth.
Soup - serve at the beginning clam soup, not for everyone as the clam and fishy taste is very strong, they later serve it with miso, was very surprised by how much shijimi clams they use. We were joking that it was a avalanche of shells in there a small tiny cup. But I think Japanese believe that this kind of clam soup actually energize the body.
Lobster - slightly overcooked, if it has been a sashimi dish, I can tell it will be wonderful this dish will turn out.
The other side dishes were normal but well complement with the omakase set. Pineapple was a good round up and cleanse the palate, but we secretly was hoping that it was some yuzu ice cream which might palate cleanse even better & round up the meal perfectly.
The only thing that I didn’t like was the seaweed they used, it was a bit bland or it could be because it is not roasted like other places we have gone to, if only the temaki and sushi they served is of a more flavourful seaweed, this meal will have been awesome, but nevertheless, understand why this place is always packed...
Read moreThis was my first omakase experience so I was quite excited. The shop is in the 3rd floor of the Shibuya stream mall but they manage to make the experience feel quite exclusive. We sat at the table because we were with our baby and they were quite accommodating of the stroller. Service was good overall although we didn’t get very frequent ocha refills.
Foodwise there were some real highlights for me. We tried some things we never tried before like bonito (delicious!) and baby squid (…) and abalone (good). They had a real tasty gindara. The tuna was delicious and delicate, so were many of the other sushi & sashimi we had like this sea bass (slightly broiled) & snapper. The letdown was that in three dishes they used yuzu which neither my husband or myself liked and they became quite a chore to finish. Some of the nonsushi items like chawanmushi & salmon roe on rice were tasty but too big a portion considering the number of dishes we were eating. My gindara had bones. The uni we had was fine, not the worst but not the best— but mine was clumsily put together and didn’t look appetising. Similarly our favorite on this trip, the anago/conger eel was only ok, and the tamago was not very good. We ended the whole thing with a slice of watermelon which seemed uninspiring. The whole thing started really strong but had a confusing order and then ended with a whimper. Its a friendly enough entry to omakase and I enjoyed the overall experience so good for a first timer. But I definitely hope to try a different and better...
Read moreLet me write a very fair review. If you haven’t had a proper sushi omakase meal, this could be above average meal but if you have eaten many sushi omakase meals you can probably skip this shop.
Here are the pros & cons:
PROS: Convenient location at Shibuya Not difficult to book via TableCheck You get plenty of food for 8k yen lunch set.
CONS: Very below par hygienic standard for a middle level sushi-ya. The table is damp and it is a not a pleasant smell too. The drink menu handed by the chef to us was wet and I wanted to go wash my hands right away 😖 The serving plate was also damp because they serve wet dishes like Japanese picked bitter gourd (should serve in a separate dish and not on the sushi serving tray ) you can refer to my photos The sous chef who served us was very sloppy and distracted. His Shari rice was dropping everywhere and same goes for uni. He said the wrong fish a few times till the other chef had to correct him. (You can see from my video) This could be the most noisy sushi ya shop I have ever been. The chefs were shouting to get the orders to the kitchen and because there are no private rooms so those customers that come with kids can be heard throughout.
In conclusion, you could try this place out of convenience if you are in Shibuya. If you have more time to plan, there are plenty of better...
