I have lived in Japan for almost 10 years and am familiar with Japanese manners. However, I was surprised and offended to encounter the prohibition against talking over phone in this restaurant. I responded to a phone call in a very low and careful voice, no louder than speaking to a companion at the table. Customers are, of course, allowed to talk to each other, so I did not think this was inappropriate. The waitress then approached me and showed a Google translation stating, “Please do not talk on the phone,” even though I had already communicated my order in Japanese.
