A friend sent the restaurant's promotion Youtube video to me and it looked amazing. I settled in hotel around 5pm, Oct 26 and went there straight afterwards. I got there around 5:40PM and was surprized that there was no queue outside. Went inside and was told I could only choose dinner course. The price was a bit surprizing too. Wasn't expecting that level of price.
I chose one at 8800 Yen. Overall, neither the food nor the service was worth the price. As far as the food was concerned, it seemed I should have gone there at lunch time ... Some of the courses were good but overall it was below my expectation, particularly the 親子丼 which was a bit terrible.
The service was shocking. At dinner, there was an additional charge of 10% service fee. In Japan, if additional service fee was charged, then you would expect an extremely excellent service. However, when I was eating, none of staffs was wandering around to check if any customer had any request. They only appeared when there was food to be served. When I was leaving, I saw all the staffs were chatting happily in the staff room which explained why I didn't see anyone walking around. Really unbelievable! I don't think such behavior would be allowed even in ordinary restaurant, not to mention in such a premium one.
I only got a pretty slack "thank you and good bye". They neither walked me down the stairs to the entrance nor demonstrated any form of appreciation.
Maybe I went there in wrong time. But anyway, the dinner was terrible. I should probably have tried the 1000 yen one at ordinary...
Read moreA restaurant that has true history in Japan! Known for their Oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl) that has been a staple dish since 1760..that's 260 years!! When you arrive, there's a line outside before it even opens although it goes by quite quickly. Once inside, you'll need to take off your shoes and the lady will give you a number to take since it's paired with your shoes. Afterwards, you'll head to a very small window and order and pay for your food. That lady will give you a small ticket to give to the server (the lady who guides you to your seat).
If you're like me, I came alone so I said with random strangers. Be careful though because the tables are very low and your legs go inside of this lower hole in the ground.
Once the food arrives, you're greeted with chicken broth and tea along with your meal. The birth was amazing and I wished there was refills like the beef broths from Korean restaurants. The meal itself was great and the chicken was extremely soft. The egg was fluffy and runny; made it even enjoyable. Honestly it was the best Oyakodon I've tasted whether in Japan or in LA and I'd definitely come back for more...
Read moreI saw a YouTube clip from the Bon Appetite channel talking about this place, a restaurant of nearly 300 years in existence and have been successful due to one dish....chicken with runny eggs on rice.
You would think that it's not much to scream about, and after looking at the set menu price you may run away, but don't. The place is really traditional and asks you to take your shoes off, once you're inside you're sitting in a traditional setup. The staff is good and they speak English. The food is bomb too, not just the rice, but everything else that cake with it. If you are new to Asian food and you may be squeamish about organs, please give them a try. Cuz the appetizer with the chicken organs are bomb.
Overall I would recommend this place, we went at night so there was no lineup. I'm not sure it would be the same during lunch, or during winter (it feels more of a cold weather food). But yeah, it's a nice departure from just chowing down on ramen and sushi...
