I would describe this place as more Japanese-Italian fusion - rather than purely Italian, with a special focus on fresh fish dishes.
The fish carpaccio (think: Italian sashimi) was well presented, and thoughtfully flavored. The tuna in particular had a perfect texture. A little more sauce on this dish would have gone a long way towards bridging the gap between its Italian roots and the Japanese produce. Nonetheless, I think it's an inspired idea!
Next was the Yokohama sardines. This dish was the highlight of our meal. Perfectly de-boned and super fresh - they paired excellently with the citrus garnish. Melt in your mouth - I would return for this dish alone!
The pizza marinara was a disappointment. I know that there are an infinity of ways to make pizza - but in my experience - this kind of Napoli-style pizza really comes to life when you let loose with the olive oil, cheese and/or tomato sauce. Either of these three elements were lacking in quantity here. Even a small drizzle of EVOO would have really elevated this dish. The tomato sauce was there, and to the chefs credit; it tasted superb - the right variety of tomatos, slow cooked, and with a nice balance of acidity and sweetness. I just wanted more of it - more moisture somewhere... Perhaps serving the pizza with a mini-carafe of olive oil could be a nice accessory?
The service was ok, but felt a little haughty. Visitors to Japan: bring a Japanese speaking friend with you - or be prepared to pull out your phone to translate the menu or ask for guidance.
Also, make sure to request a table if you prefer to make eye-contact with your dining partner. We were initially seated at the bar area, but the maitre-d found space for us at a table - which was appreciated. Also, be aware of the time limit; we were asked to leave after precisely 2 hours, with food still on...
Read moreToday was my third visit. First was January 2017 and I was meeting four friends for pre-show drinks and a light meal. The pizzas were amazing.
The second visit was just me, late fall 2017. I was in the area and remembered how good it was the first time. It was oyster season and there were lots of interesting things on the seasonal menu, but being alone meant I had to limit myself to a couple choices - a salad and a pasta - both a little larger than necessary for me. This really is a place to go to share dishes. It was very nice. Not amazing.
Today I was alone again. Nice salad. Perfectly cooked linguine. Not amazing, but certainly a place I can recommend. The menu does seem more limited than before. And I’d recommend going with at least one person who’ll...
