I’m an Indian professional athlete living in Japan for several years. I’ve visited American Diner Motomachi more than 10 times with my family (my wife is Japanese and our kids are Indian-Japanese). We were always treated kindly by an elder staff member in the past, and the place felt welcoming. But on a recent visit, we had an extremely painful and discriminatory experience that left us shocked and deeply hurt.
I invited a few American and Indian friends for dinner. When we arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty—only two tables were occupied. However, we were told the place was “fully booked” and initially denied seating. After some requests, we were reluctantly given one table for our group.
From that point on, two female staff members started treating us very rudely. We were told to order one meal and one drink per person, which we understood and followed. But the behavior that followed felt clearly discriminatory. The attitude, tone, and overall treatment felt like they didn’t want us there at all.
Our guests were on the way, but due to the increasingly humiliating treatment, we cancelled the rest of our dinner plans. Even my Japanese wife, who has never experienced this kind of situation before, was shocked and depressed by the way we were treated. We quietly ate our meals with one friend and left as soon as possible.
When I brought up our experience while paying, I was simply told, “I will tell them,” without any sincere apology or acknowledgment of how serious this situation was.
We never expected such treatment, especially in a place where we previously felt comfortable. I’m not writing this to stop others from visiting, but to honestly share what happened to my family and our guests.
This kind of experience should not happen to anyone—especially in 2025, in an international city...
Read moreMy family and I frequent this place as it is near the church we go to. The food is ok. The service is horrible. The staff are cold, impolite, and they chitchat a lot, which is not the typical "japanese service".
We had our worst experience earlier today. From the moment we came they made us feel unwelcome. We came in few minutes before 8:30 pm, and they reminded us that the last order is at 9pm. The restaurant closes at 10pm. We know that it typical in Japan that they remind you of the last order time, especially when you are coming in late, but the way it was asked by the server made us feel like they don't want us to dine in since it was late. When we ordered, initially, we only asked for 1 drink for a table of 5 (3 adults and 2 kids) as some of us have not yet decided what drinks to order. The server rudely reacted, "1 drink for 5?". When I confirmed that she heard it correctly, she then implied that we are only ordering 1 drink for 5. Then at 9:15pm, our table was the only one left, a server approached us and told us that it was time to pay as the restaurant is closing. I asked what time they close and the server said 930pm. LIE! We didn't waste our time complaining to them, as we were about to leave anyway. Told my husband that it would be our last time...
