Kalapawai Cafe & Deli — Restaurant in Oʻahu

I had the absolute worst experience here and I am not one to complain. Even though, I recieved a very plain lox bagel I did not let my boyfriend complain because I felt bad that we brought a dog to an advertised pet friendly restraunt! However, they are no longer pet friendly and a lady with a black cardigan, glasses, and hair tied in a bun was completely intolerant even when I said I would remove the dog not even from the building, but from the outdoor seating because the owner was still inside ordering and I would have to explain the situation to her. I had just recieved my food, but she made a strong effort to ask me to pack my food and leave. We were the only customers outside. They were not busy. They did not need the table. I was not inconveniencing anyone and the dog only had to be there for however long it to for them to take the rest of my groups order.

We sat on different tables because it was a party of 6 and while I did not think the food was great this was probably because I paid $7 for a bagel with cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers. I would thought that $7 was not expensive and that it was probably a lox inspired bagel have been perfectly happy leaving with my 18% tip on two meals and two drinks, but after we left my sister showed me her takeout of the same order and it was full of salmon?

When I called the same lady who I assume is a manager answered and I started with saying I was just there so she knew I was the one who brought the dog. I asked if salmon was included with the lox bagel and she said " it comes with a toss salad of potato squares" she clearly avoided my question because she was clearly aware my food was wrong after trying to grab it and pack it earlier. I had to ask multiple times if I was supposed to receive lox in my lox bagel and she only said yes after I mentioned my sisters order contained salmon while mine did not. She offered me a new bagel or a refund. I asked for the refund of only the bagel and that she can still charge me for the sandwich/drinks, and leave the full tip. I waited three days before a refund/charge and today I was charged the full amount?? If they could go through the effort of removing the pet friendly check on google they could have given me a refund of less than one tenth the party paid for?? I dont need the money, but what kind of lying...

Horrible spot. They have unfortunately forgotten the aloha they have started with. I have been coming here for a long time. It’s actually my favorite restaurant to come to on this side of the island. However this time, I wanted to quickly grab something to go and eat it at the outside table before they close (placed order 7:50 by phone, they close at 8:30) I also work in the restaurant industry and I can understand how its annoying to serve guests 30 minutes prior to closing time. However normally what id do is offer to do a to go and they can eat it in restaurant if they’d like as long as they’re gone by closing time. Keep in mind I work in a more fine dining environment and I would still make these exceptions to keep guests happy. However here were its more casual its somehow not acceptable like is the normal policy on the morning. Anyhow, I was harassed by a server even though the restaurant was nearly empty that ‘another guest might use the table’, and requested a exception be made. She completely ignored me and simply repeated herself. I asked to speak to a manager to see if I could just finish the order I had already placed. Instead the manager told me there was a table around the corner I could use. I explained to her hey I understand its annoying to serve someone 30 minutes prior to closure thats why we did a to go order. So we go out to this table and its a janky table that is clearly not even owned by kalapawai with one metal chair and a homeless person sitting on it. Lol. I guess screw me and...

all the food was SUPERB! The pork chop with mushroom gravy was actually BEAUTIFUL for being a take out order. I couldn't believe how savory the mushroom gravy was, it is soooooo good! They let me sub the grilled squash with roasted potatoes and I also sub the starch for fresh green beans. Just thinkin about that pork chop entree makes my mouth water. My husband ate the entire entree without uttering a word which means he LOVED IT! He is a creature of habit so I know when he says nothing instead of complaining, this means he's loving what he's eating lol lol lol. I had the macaroni &cheese! The texture of the macaroni was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! the only suggestion I have for the chef for the Mac n cheese is to add some BLACK TRUFFLE ZEST and possibly a dash of TRUFFLE SALT. The Mac and cheese is SO GOOD that I actually plan on ordering it REGULARLY! Now their LILIKOI CHEESE CAKE is OUTSTANDING! the slice is HUGE and even though it cost $9, I think it's enough for 2 people to share so WELL WORTH the cost! The only thing that'll prevent me from eating at KALAPAWAI frequently is the cost. It was pricey BUT the food is all fresh, home made tasting, arranged well so fur this quality of food, it isn't low cost! Please don't let this deter you from enjoying this restaurant!
