I really like the slow bar coffee concept of this little shop and expected the coffee to reflect this. I think Lao coffee is some of the best under-rated coffee in the world. Unfortunately this shop doesn't help to highlight the coffee Laos has to offer.
I ordered an Americano which was made using the Flair58. I'm by no means a coffee expert, but I own a Flair58 and know what it takes to pull a good shot. The espresso shot was pulled within 10 seconds or so which produced a very underexstracted shot missing the complexity of flavors the bean has to offer. I dont know how many grams they were using but if they are using 20gm, they aren't even getting a 1 to 1 ratio. I thought maybe it was just that staff person, but I saw another staff person do the same process. It seems like maybe they were trained only a couple times and then got lazy.
My wife ordered the Cafe Au Late iced and while I didn't closely observe the pour over process, it seemed that they just poured hot water into the grounds and then let it drip through without ensuring proper extraction.
This shop has the equipment to easily make some amazing coffee, but unfortunately it just falls flat. With a little effort they could be making some...

Wonderful selection of Lao coffees including Gesha, Typica and Catimor varieties from different farms across Laos.
Great education materials (in English) about the farms and processing methods.
If you’re a specialty coffee enthusiast, then Lula Lao cafe and Saffron cafe are MUST visits during your stay in LPB.
Both cafes feature genuine Lao specialty coffee and offer various brewing methods.
Pro tip: Lula coffee provides a spider map for each coffee (see image below). A fun way to explore your experience of the coffee against the intention of the roaster (potential...
Read moreHad two or three cups of filtered coffee months ago, but none of them tasted good. It’s even disappointing considering the price. (Higher than many much better coffee roasters in Europe) not sure if it’s because Lao coffee beans are not my cup of tea or the roasting/brewing was bad. Does not worth the price at all, and there was no air con. I would rather go for iced americano from other coffee shops.
You may find the experience to be fun if you barely know anything about coffee beans since the ladies will explain coffee beans 101 to you, just like any other specialty coffee shops in the world. The services were great...
