We decided to catch up with some old friends at the restaurant Zviedru Vārti. The place is located right in the center of Riga, near the Saeima building. The restaurant is quite small and not particularly cozy. The bar is separated by what looks like an artificial wall, giving the impression that there’s a kitchen behind it – though there isn’t. On a weekday evening, the place was quite busy, mostly with foreign visitors. The waitress deserves credit for speaking fluent English, which was great. We didn’t eat, but as a vegetarian, I noticed the menu offers very few options for people like me. I counted just two dishes without meat – some pasta and one soup. There’s no dedicated vegetarian section on the menu. As for the coffee, I had a latte, and it was pretty weak – definitely not the best one I’ve had. Overall, the experience was pretty average. The atmosphere wasn’t great, and the interior was nothing special. I wouldn’t recommend this place for a nice gathering...
Read moreWent to 'Bella Ciao' but ended up at 'Zviedru Varti' 2nd location (as they spread out or something). Although the interior wasn't matching the traditional Latvian cuisine concept, we ended up staying as we wanted to give it a try. Honestly, one of the worst dining experiences ever. We ordered a veal dish (€20+) and potato pancakes with salmon (hot snack; €12+). Had to wait for the food for over an hour. While waiting, we finished our drinks and the staff didn't bother to come check on us or anything. When the food came, the veal was grey, 1/3 potato pancakes was burnt to charcoal. I feel sorry for the staff working there, as something is deeply wrong with the way the place is being run. Don't make the same mistake as we did and avoid this place like a plague. If I could leave a 0, I would. Tourist trap,...

Tucked away in the heart of Old Town Riga, this charming family run restaurant offers a truly memorable dining experience. The lamb soup was a standout soulfully rich, perfectly seasoned, and clearly made from scratch with care. The potato dumplings were another highlight, comforting and delicious with that unmistakable homemade touch.
The pasta dish was cooked to perfection al dente with a beautifully balanced sauce. You can tell the chef knows their craft and takes pride in every plate that leaves the kitchen.
Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive without being intrusive, making the whole evening feel relaxed and welcoming. A must visit if you’re looking for authentic flavors and heartfelt cooking in...
