We went for a lunch (5 people after the business meeting). Some of us ordered the weekly menu (just funny 30 Eur per person :::((( ). All have ordered the goulash soup (11 Euros a la carte), the main dish was different for all of us.
And now the start: we were waiting for about an hour for that that was on a weekly menu !!! Finally, our Latvian colleagues started to complain. The waitresses seemingly had no orientation, were lost and formally rude :(
And voila - the goulash soup is here - not from the freezer - but just luke-warm. OK, the color was right, but absolutely no taste, just a thin substance (11 Eur). Hey guys, go to some Polish highway café to learn how to prepare the right gulaszowa :(
Still better: all different main dishes had arrived within the 25 mins interval :( I had received my beef-Stroganoff second, while my soup was just half finished. Afterwards, I was nearly finishing my Stroganoff, while the other's dishes just started arriving.
The Stroganoff itself was a meagre tasteless stew of beef, with some pieces being tender and soft, while others (about one third of them) were unchewable :(. The mashed potato was seemingly prepared from the pulver, and it was thin and watery :( Visit my wife to learn how to prepared the real thick mashed potato with a lot of butter.
Finally, our German colleague had to leave for his flight while we were still waiting for our deserts.
Eh, the best stuff by that lunch was the...
Read moreThe worst eating experience I had in 5 years in Riga! A place to avoid if you want to eat something tasty & at least warm.
The rib -just 1 rib! One piece of bone! for which I did asked if that was the main course: ONE rib- was cold, tasteless, had lots of fat in the middle ( seen in the pict in the middle of the plate), the sauce had no taste & the plate was full of sour cabbage & potatoes. One of them had been cooked with the worm in it.
Three persons we tried the hommus & we didn't know what we were eating. When we asked what it was, they said it was made from beans but there was no taste of tahini, lemon, cumin or any taste that could have reminded us of hummus.
They served the soup at the same time with the main course!!! The soup was salty.
Within the beer plate the best was the black bread with garlic.
On the plus side: two of my friends liked the salmon. We had a nice, helpful waitresses & that is the reason from my side for the 2 stars as my food was disappointing & waste of money.

Read moreMixed experience at Key to Riga. Traditional Latvian food served in a rustic restaurant.
Beer bread & butter with garlic was delicious. Recommend. Slow roasted pork with potatoes was tasty and a reasonable portion for the price.
The Forest Deer was a small portion, the meat was not tender and lacked flavour. The Halibut tasted good, but a very small portion for the price. Both of these dishes were expensive and disappointing. Guests were hungry after starter & a main course.
The lady we made a reservation with was helpful and the restaurant felt friendly and warm. Our male server in the evening was unfriendly and dismissive. He didn't say hello or smile once. We had to share menus, ask to order drinks, no napkins or plates for our starters, and we were seated in front of the door so had a cold draught for the whole meal. It felt like we were unwelcome. Disappointing.
Key to Riga has potential, however your experience depends very much on the time & day you go, who's serving you & who's in the kitchen. If you want to guarantee a good time, go elsewhere. I...
