I was traveling with a party of 8 and we stumbled upon TONG when our first choice restaurant didn't have any availability. They were able to seat us immediately and I really enjoyed my meal. I did the "Experience Set" menu which includes an appetizer, 2 small plates, 1 main (your choice), and 2 desserts (your choice) for sharing with 1 other person (2 people total). The appetizer was Yuzu Kombu Capellini, which was a small serving is pasta with a yuzu kombu sauce and caviar on top. This was strongly Japanese flavored and enjoyable for me. The 2 small plates where Yam Rice Arancini and Serrano Ham Sandwich. The arancini was excellent and one of my favorite bites the entire meal. The Serrano ham was my least favorite of the entire meal - it had very little meat in it and it was too sweet. Our main was Iberico pork two ways which included grilled Iberico pork with chimichurri and mashed potatoes and char siew pork belly. The portion for this was very generous and both dishes were really good. I loved the char siew pork belly. For dessert, we chose the chendol and charred banana cake. The chendol was a winner with us - it was not like traditional chendol but we loved it. It was coconut mousse served with palm sugar ice cream, red beans, and popping candy. We weren't big fans of the banana cake. The cake was dense and dry and not very strongly flavored with banana. Overall, this was a really good meal and I would recommend eating at TONG if you are looking for fun fusion food.

Tong restaurant orchestrated an unforgettable evening, enriched by the delightful company of my cousin. The culinary symphony unfolded as we explored an array of proteins, each reaching a pinnacle of excellence that compelled us to order beyond the constraints of our full bellies. A standout was the grilled cauliflower with white chocolate sauce, a symphony of flavors in a genius combination that captivated the senses. The Foie Gras claypot rice with Serrano ham elevated the dining experience with a visually stunning and fiery presentation. The ritual of drizzling whiskey over the claypot, unveiling the treasures within, including the heavenly burnt rice infused with the earlier spectacle, left an indelible mark. A minor hiccup arose when the Pina Colada mocktail faced a pineapple juice shortage, prompting a substitution with orange juice. The result was unexpectedly exquisite, rendering a pineapple-based Pina Colada a distant memory. While every dish exceeded expectations, the Not A Chendol fell slightly short. The chocolate ice cream and red bean combination felt a tad out of place, yet the redeeming quality was the delightful surprise of candy pop explosions, adding a playful touch to the experience. Tong restaurant remains a culinary gem, leaving patrons with memories of extraordinary flavors and transcending moments.

TONG’s ID befits its premium dining experience although the playlist that evening was better suited for a dance club. I was appreciative that they sat me on a comfortably large table in spite of being a solo dinner. Vincent the AM guided me through the menu and I selected two appetisers, a main, a dessert and a cocktail. Of the two appetisers, the capellini with prawns was as perfect as it gets. Pasta was al dente, prawns were cooked just right and the garlicky seasoning was thoroughly enjoyable and super tasty. The watermelon with pickled fresh anchovies was equally flawless with a good sweet-salty-acidic balance. It was also very pretty to look at. The perch fillet grilled with chermoula spices was well matched. Liked that the skin was crispy while the meat was moist. The only two grievances I have with this dish is the portion (too large - one fillet would suffice) and the lack of a carb (like a grilled polenta or yaki mochi). The Black Forest deconstructed dessert was playful, decadent and generous. The young team appears to be still finding their footing although their fundamentals appear to be wholly in place. Would return in the future to see how they have evolved.

Tong Restaurant in Penang offers a unique blend of casual fine dining with a sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance. The warm lighting, tasteful decor, and attentive service create an inviting atmosphere, making it a great spot for both special occasions and casual dinners. The overall vibe is elegant yet comfortable, setting the stage for a memorable meal.

The food, while beautifully presented, left us with mixed feelings. Dishes like the Arancini and prawn capellini were decent, with the Arancini boasting a crispy exterior and creamy center, while the capellini was light and flavorful. However, the standout dish was undoubtedly the Grilled Perch with Asam Pedas. The fish was perfectly grilled—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside—paired with a tangy, spicy asam pedas sauce that elevated the dish to another level. It was a true highlight and showcased the kitchen’s ability to deliver bold, authentic flavors.

That said, the prices felt a bit steep for the overall quality and portion sizes. While the ambiance and service were top-notch, some dishes didn’t quite justify their cost. If you’re willing to splurge for the experience and don’t mind the higher price point, Tong Restaurant is worth a visit—especially for that unforgettable Grilled Perch...
