Nested amongst a row of terrace double-storey houses, this quint shop provides a variety of local sweet desserts. A large crowd of teens and young adults flood this place to its brim.
Creamy Peanut soup is highly recommended. Its texture is creamy and smooth with that amazingly rich roasted peanut flavour. But, sadly, its Black Sesame Soup is just average. Their Red Bean Soup is as common as it gets.
Sweet Beancurd with Barley and Ginkgo tasted watered down. Shop could have provided a bottle of syrup for those who 'comes with sweet teeth'.
Ai Yu jelly can be a bit too sour despite the fact that the lemon given was left unsqueezed.
Additional orders were Tau Hu Fa with Gula Melaka. Smooth and gentle but i did detect minute bubbles in the tau hu fa. Brings me back to the days where even a minute bubble would see the Master Chef stoming out from the kitchen taking back each and every bowl, and came back with a fresh Master Chef touch Tau Hu Fa. Now, i guess its more commercial than Sifoo class. As for the Gula Melaka, i found it to be more sugar sweet that left a sweetener tastecat the back of my tongue. I could be wrong here but isn't this ancient sweetener supposed to taste like smoky caramel and toffee-edged rather than like saccharine?
Red bean paste peanut could do with a fresh wok of oil. Though the initial taste is good but it did leave with a tint of 'bitter-overnight' taste on my pallet long after I have left the premise.
To have me go back there, it would definitely be for that delicious Creamy Peanut soup.
Overall, it's an enjoyable casual no-fuss night out, but nothing beats real homecooked desserts from genuine ingredients to give you that satisfying feeling and after dinner...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went there last week at around 9.30pm with 2 adults and 6kids. Basically we ordered one dessert for each of us and some snacks. One of the staff approached us and said we had to wait 30mins for the bingsu and we said ok. The bingsu started to come at around 10.20pm one by one. By the time we received our 4 bingsuās is already 10.30pm which is the closing time for the shop. The foreigner male worker was standing beside our table and waiting for us to finish the desserts. We finished one bowl, he took one bowl, we finished another one, then he took another one. Literally he was just standing next to us with one pail to collect the bowl. After that another local staff came to our table and replaced our ordered chit with the receipt without even telling us. After 5mins, he came to us again and said rudely to us ā I put the receipt on the table and u go pay nowā. I was like huh (u know this kind of expression). Then he said go pay now. That time one of my kid havenāt even finish the bingsu yet. We did raise this issue on that day to another 2 local staffs which are much more friendly and respectful towards us. Both of their face was very cheerful and talked to us nicely. I know u did put a note that u close the shop at 10.30pm. Are u really closed the shop 10.30pm sharp when our bingsu just finished served? Is this how u operate F&B? So ur staffs will be chasing all the customer away even though they havenāt finish eating? I hope the owner of the shop sees this review and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had a fantastic visit to Tong Sui Po in George Town! A super friendly, skinny staff memberāwho mentioned heās a MotoGP fanāmade a strong impression by explaining the menu in such detail. As first-timers, we immediately grasped what each dish was, thanks to his patience and enthusiasm.
I tried both a sweet dessert and a sour-refreshing oneāand both were absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfectly balanced and not overly sweet like what we often find back in Indonesia with loads of condensed milk and sugar.
What makes Tong Sui Po even more special: ⢠Itās a local gem known for its authentic Chinese-style tong sui, offering over 30 varieties from red bean, black glutinous rice, bubur cha-cha, mango pomelo sago, honeydew, green bean sago, peanut, black sesame, and more ļæ¼ ļæ¼. ⢠The desserts are praised for being just-right in sweetness, evoking nostalgic childhood flavors ļæ¼. ⢠Signatures like the Yin Yang (peanut + black sesame) are popular not just for taste but also for their Instagram-worthy presentation ļæ¼ ļæ¼. ⢠The vibe blends vintage charm with cozy seating, and there are even savory snacks like belacan chicken wings or lotus bean pancakes if you want something more filling ļæ¼ ļæ¼.
Overall, Tong Sui Po nails the perfect balance of warm hospitality, authentic and flavorful desserts, and a cozy vibe. Highly recommend it for anyone seeking genuine tong sui in Penang. Iāll...
