If it was good I don't mind paying the exorbitant price tag but through the years this place just keeps disappointing everyone over and over again. Mediocre Spam fries for RM18?!! A can of no brand luncheon meat probably cost half of it and you can probably fry it crispier yourself at home also would 100% taste better, this one had very little to no sodium in it -__- how can lah? That's not spam at all. The Hainanese/Oriental chicken chop was grilled not deep fried pffft even the original chicken chops sauce was bland 👎🏻 not forgetting the RM24 overpriced oxtail soup with barely any meat chunks or bones in them, just hella bunch of onions, carrots and celery in thick dark brown gravy. How are they still in business? Well maybe coz it's their house. Started frequenting this place during the mid 2000s but sad to know they didn't bother to keep the price affordable or even the food quality. Don't bother checking out, just go to any James Foo around instead in fact I'm sure any Western food stall in kopitiam beats this place and it's probably 1/2 the price.
Edit: Well, hi owner if you kept up your food quality and service half as your thorough rebuttal then this review wouldn't have existed. If you claim to have such 'restaurant policy since the 2000s' please put up a sign clearly displayed at the cashier or anywhere within the seating area thanks and we can move on now.
Some people just don't deal well with constructive criticism pfft or just criticism for that matter. And yes, people want sodium and crisp in their spam fries not a can of barely 10-12bux retail price Singaporean brand luncheon meat marked up to RM18 that probably isn't served...
Read moreSimple honest-to-goodness home made western dishes in a house that features al-fresco dining with lush green plants all around you. That basically sums up Yaw's Roast & Grill. It's been a secret kept by local Penangites for many years, but now that the word is out, it's getting more and more crowded nowadays.
Yaw's started life as Top Top Cafe in Pulau Tikus back in the 1970's. It was famous for its western dishes and also some local favourites back then. That tradition has been kept alive into the next generation but at their own residence in Midlands area.
It's not easy to find the place, so Waze it. At first glance you'd be forgiven if you missed the place, but nowadays it's easier to find because there's a never ending flow of people standing outside the entrance.
Seating is in the garden area, and you're surrounded by orchids, trees and plants. There are quite a few tables further away from the entrance, but I prefer the ones nearer to the entrance as they allow better elbow room.
Some of the favourites here are the different chicken chops, either in Hainanese style or with black pepper sauce. There's a selection of fish dishes and steaks as well.
One of the must try dishes is the chicken pot pie that's served in a cup with a big puff pastry on top.
They offer ad-hoc breakfast specials as well including Nasi Lemak and Hainanese dishes every once in a while, so keep a lookout for it on their FB page.
Prices are very reasonable and that's one of the reasons why the place is always packed. Parking may be an issue especially during peak dining hours, so come early (like maybe 6:00pm -...
Read moreAs a local, I used to love the place for nice affordable western food. But recently the quality is just disappointing, the overall service is chaotic even after so many years in business which is unacceptable with so many wrong or missed orders. You can literally see the waiter's face getting confused trying to look for their "seniors" for help. My thoughts from yesterday's meal is basically this, you are paying solely for them to cook the meat for you, that's it. The side dishes are all off the shelves which you can get it in packaging from supermarket then cook it yourself, and the soup is just Campbell's canned soup plus some tweaks and modifications. Btw, you get only a sad amount of 1 cherry tomato, even if you order a Rm30ish lamb chop. At least put in 1 more, it cost less than 10cents but can make the cafe food less sad and cheapskate. If you want good chicken chop, head to The Lighthouse cafe, food there are decently priced and taste fantastic, you will get your money out from everybite. If you want delicious Chicken mushroom pie, head to Khoon pastry house. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you are there purely for the cozy outdoor dining spot. I truly hope Yaw's Roast and Grill will be able to make improvements and "institution" changes to their service, food quality and portion, otherwise they will keep losing customers, as of now they...
