Fai Fai Crab @ Mount Austin (JB) – A Mixed Experience

Craving for crab and seafood, we decided to try the popular Fat Fat Crab outlet in Mount Austin, conveniently located near our regular family massage spot. Despite some prior concerns from online reviews about pushy upselling, we went ahead with an open mind. 🦀 What We Ordered:

*Crab Steamed with Egg and Chinese Wine We were offered a promotion: 2 "XXL" crabs for RM288, recommended directly by the restaurant captain.

While the crab was fresh and tasted fine, the size was disappointing — it felt smaller than the advertised XXL size and what we’ve seen in other restaurants.

The set came with a complimentary small portion of clams, which we actually enjoyed more than expected.

*Salted Egg Squid Well-prepared and tasty. Fresh squid with a flavorful coating. ✅

*Fried Mantis Shrimp in Italian Sauce Strong flavors, a bit unique for local seafood but pleasantly surprising and delicious.

*Stir-Fried Lotus Root with Chinese Yam One of the standout vegetable dishes – crunchy, flavorful, and well-executed. 👍

*Fried Mantou Crispy outside, soft inside – a nice side to go with the seafood gravies.

👎 Downsides:

*Hard Selling / Pushy Service While we were okay with paying for premium crab, it was clear the staff only pushed the high-end promo without offering any affordable alternatives.

It wasn’t overly aggressive, but enough to feel uncomfortable — confirming what some previous reviews mentioned.

*Discrepancy in Crab Size The biggest letdown was the size of the crabs. Despite being sold as XXL, they clearly didn’t match expectations or standards set by similar-priced competitors.

✅ Verdict:

Food Quality: Generally good, with fresh ingredients and tasty side dishes.

Service Experience: Marred by the perceived hard selling and lack of transparency.

Value for Money: Questionable, especially when you're paying RM288 for “XXL” crabs that don’t look the part.

👉 Would we return? Probably not. There are other seafood places in JB with better value, friendlier service, and more...

I'm really disappointed this restaurant. Im planning order as food delivery for my family celebrate Father's Day.

I whatsapp on 12pm+, status online but non response without read my msg.Im waiting one an hours and calling them on 1pm+.Unfornately , They didnt pick up my call.

Until 3pm+ they finally picking up , i havent finish asking ,they already said fully booking on today. I'm started asking why cant get their reply in this 3 hours. They keep saying the same thing with didnt listening what im trying to said and juz mention : '' They really really busy in pick up the phone calling for phone non stop ringing and msg too much for them. They already try their hard for replying ''

All conversation didnt greeting and told about sorry .Didnt polite with customer too. Failure in ur customer service will let ur customer run away even though ur food...

Good seafood restaurant in JB - Mount Austin area. As their name suggests, the highlights here are the crabs. We ordered 3 crowd favorites; salted egg, chili crab and black pepper.

The black pepper might be a little overwhelming for some. Both the salted egg and chili crab are equally good - in their own way. Couldn’t get enough of the fried mantou x crab sauce combo; we had to order another serving of fried mantou to dip in both the salted egg and chili crab sauces.

Will definitely visit this place for seafood when i’m in JB area.

A good place for family/friends gathering. Don’t forget to book in advance before going as it is usually full house during peak periods.

The only downside is the slow service from their staffs; probably due to full house or peak hours. Don’t be mistaken, i had a wonderful experience...
