This is my second stay at Hashtag Capsule Hostel in Mount Austin, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best value-for-money stays in JB.
The capsules are roomy and comfortable, with cozy ambient lighting that gives a calm, private feel. The AC does take a few minutes to cool down, but once it kicks in, it’s just right. I also like the little fan inside the pod so you can control your own airflow. Everything feels well-maintained — from the bedsheets and towels to the flooring — and the whole place smells fresh and clean.
Bathrooms are spotless and separated by gender, which I really appreciate. The shared area near reception is a nice touch — great if you want to grab a quick bite, chill for a bit, or just sit and plan your day.
One thing that really stood out to me this time was the kindness of the owners (uncle and auntie). During my stay, I saw a group of young adults who turned up at 6 AM wanting to stay until noon. Uncle went out of his way to offer them a very good rate — even less than half the usual price — but they still tried to bargain for more. Honestly, I feel that while this is a budget hostel, respect should go both ways. The owners really try their best to keep prices fair and the place clean, so we as guests should also be reasonable and appreciate their effort.
The location is another big plus — right in Mount Austin, with lots of eateries, cafes, and convenience stores nearby. It’s safe, quiet enough at night, and very convenient for a short stay or stopover.
✅ Highlights:
Spacious capsules with adjustable airflow & cozy lighting
Extremely clean bathrooms and well-kept facilities
Helpful, straightforward hosts who clearly care about guests
Perfect location with plenty of food options nearby
Affordable rates that are already generous compared to other hostels
This is exactly why I chose to come back — it’s consistent, comfortable, and genuinely welcoming. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a clean, safe, and affordable place to stay in...
Read moreThe capsule hostel offers a well-thought-out and enjoyable stay, featuring excellent amenities, a unique climate control system, and top-notch cleanliness. The auntie staff provided a thorough orientation.
The hostel's amenities were well-thought-out, including a cleverly designed toilet system with clear labels for the lights and heater. The air-conditioned common area was a comfortable spot to relax, and the capsules themselves were brightly lit and designed to maximize comfort. There was also a water dispenser at the shared pantry that was able to dispense warm, cold and room temperature clean water for drinking.
Key highlights include: • Unique climate control: One of the standout features of this hostel was its unique climate control system. The capsules are all located within a large, cold room, which maintains a consistently cool temperature. Each capsule has a small fan that controls the flow of cold air into the capsule, allowing you to adjust the temperature to your liking via a convenient knob.
• Cleanliness: The capsules themselves were clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and all the amenities I needed. Towels and bed linen were provided, and I appreciated that they were freshly changed for each customer. It was clear that the hostel prioritized cleanliness and comfort.
• Security: Security was also top-notch, with a single access card providing secure access to the main entrance, my labelled locker, and my labelled capsule. It was convenient and reassuring to have everything linked to one card.
While the capsules aren’t soundproof, complimentary earplugs help mitigate this issue. Families with young children and guests with mobility challenges may find the design less suitable due to the need for silence and climbing into upper capsules.
With efficient check-in/out processes and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, this hostel is highly recommended for travelers seeking comfort, convenience, and an innovative...
Read moreThe capsule pod was clean and spacious enough to sit up straight while leaning against the wall. The aircon inside the pod is not as cooling as in the room though, so be mindful of that. Duvet is quite thick so some people might feel hot if they use it through the night. Also the common space was pretty dark and gloomy, contrary to the pictures put up by the owners. Also contrary to the pictures all the computers are off, and the LAN room was also shut, so I don't think guests can use them. Definitely feels like the place has seen better days
Shower has heater also but hot water only comes out when the pressure is set low. If pressure is set all the way the water is cold for some reason.
Location is convenient at the heart of mount Austin, so can cover most popular restaurants, convenience stores and even a Jaya grocer within a 5-10 minute walking distance
Counter staff consists of an uncle and auntie, probably the owners. Their attitude was not friendly, and give you a frowning face everytime they see you. Didn't feel very welcome. But oh well, the location alone more than makes up for their hospitality shortcomings.
Would recommend for a 1 night stay while travelling up Malaysia, and catch a plane or bus the next day. Preferably solo or with friends, definitely not with kids as the room has a...
