Came here with my family of 5. Ordered the assorted seafood yuan yang rice set with superior stock (add 5RM), binchotan charcoal beancurd, iced sweet and sour pork, tartar prawns with cheese and ended with mango pomelo sago and or nee.
Assorted Seafood Yuan Yang Rice with Superior Stock (+RM5) The crown jewel of the meal, this rice dish arrived bubbling in a claypot, promising richness. The “yuan yang” format – likely referring to a dual-cooked rice or a mixed gravy base – carried the bold essence of the ocean without drowning the palate in brine. The superior stock upgrade was worth every sen: deeply umami, luxuriously silky, and laced with the sweetness of crustaceans and mollusks. The rice held up impeccably, absorbing the broth without becoming mush. However, the slipper lobster, while generous in portion, lacked the firm succulence expected – its texture veering slightly into the mundane. Still, a beautifully cohesive dish that respected the ingredients without ostentation.
Salt Roasted Kampung Chicken This dish was a quiet masterclass in restraint. The kampung chicken, leaner than commercial birds, was imbued with a delicate salinity that enhanced its natural gaminess. The meat pulled apart cleanly yet retained a pleasant chew – a testament to precise roasting. The skin, paper-thin, smooth and silky, authentic salt roasted chicken at its finest.
Binchotan Charcoal Beancurd A standout. This was not just tofu – it was tofu elevated. Charred ever so slightly on the exterior to yield a smoky whisper, the beancurd’s interior remained ethereally silky, almost custard-like. The binchotan charcoal lent not just heat but character, creating a juxtaposition of deep earthiness and the tofu’s delicate sweetness. Paired with a slightly tangy and creamy sauce, it danced between subtlety and savor.
Iced Sweet and Sour Pork Visually intriguing, but ultimately a textural gamble. The “iced” element was likely a chilled plating or a glaze served cool. While this twist was novel, it risked dulling the crispness of the fried batter. The sweet and sour balance was standard and satisfying, though not boundary-pushing. A dependable dish, but overshadowed by its more confidently executed counterparts.
Tartar Prawns with Cheese Rich and indulgent, this dish veered into fusion comfort food territory. The prawns were plump and sweet, blanketed in a tangy tartar sauce that played well with the mellow sharpness of melted cheese. However, the richness may fatigue some palates after a few bites. Best shared, this was the type of dish that aims to please rather than provoke thought. I like how they thought to put melon with the dish to balance the richness.
Mango Pomelo Sago Average at best, this wasn’t authentic to me and was more like a mango slushy with plain jelly. Overall, this wasn’t enjoyable.
Or Nee (Yam Paste Dessert) A sleeper hit and arguably one of the finest executions of this Teochew classic. The yam was finely milled, luxuriously smooth, and gently sweetened, possibly cooked down with lard or shallot oil for depth. Garnished traditionally, it embraced nostalgia but didn’t skimp on refinement. The texture – neither too dense nor too oily – was bang on. A graceful,...
Read moreWas tempted to try this after seeing alot of their menu looks so different from the typical Chinese food zi char kind. The pricing were also reasonable (and as usual, cheap for Sporean context).
We had the (1) Seafood poached rice (泡饭) $26+1.80, (2) The chilli mini lobster with fried mantou $39.90, (3) Fried White bait $24 (白饭鱼) and Omelette with cai po $10.
First.. the poach rice, which usually isn't my kind of food but it was GOOD! The broth was the best I had and it goes so well with the rice. There were 2 big and fresh prawns inside as well. The scallops were kinda of a miss but overall still great.
The mini lobsters were decent... Chilli sauce is very much like the chilla crab style in spore. It has Abit of dried shrimps if I am not wrong and therefore is quite fragrant. The 4 pieces of lobsters were half big and half small but for the price, guess it's alright.
The omelette was strangely good too... Despite being a simple dish. For the price, it's kind of a bargain.
And finally the white bait, although good but it came soooo late that we were alrdy full and had to takeover most of it. The salt and pepper toppings on it were really good and went well with the fish. It's good but way way too expensive. I mean if the poached rice is 27.80 and this small plate of fish (more like a starter) is 24, then not worth it at all.
Their service was good too and enjoyed the meal thoroughly. Only thing was the waiter suggested for us to order the medium poached rice instead, which fortunately we didn't. The small bowl was alrdy big enough for the 2 of us and we couldn't even finish all the food. Imagine having the bigger size one.... So they should be trained to suggest appropriately, instead of just trying to upsell us?
Overall, this is a 8.5 out of 10. Will definitely be back again and as an encouragement, they deserve a...
