A clean and simple place yet there’s a modern rustic feel to it. Service is very welcoming from the moment you step onto their premises.
Smiles and greetings from the get go, an old school bread roasting station w a modern touch by the entrance, you know that you’re stepping into smth different.
The crowd really reflects its name, local cafe where the locals come to enjoy the quaint place.
The owners and staff were very friendly and welcoming. They don’t shy away from recommending what’s on their menu and what’s good (all are good! 🤣).
I went for their Nasi Lemak set which consists of an array of your usual suspects; from the amazing spiced fried chicken wings, sambal sotong (squid), sambal prawn 🦐 (not your regular small 🦐 prawns hor), fried sunny side up (runny! 🥹), a stick of chunky chicken satay w satay peanut sauce, super crispy fried anchovies, peanuts, fried papadam-like crackers and an amazing sambal for the Nasi Lemak.
This whole set… let me be clear; it is an amazing display of how delicious and homely this old school dish can and have evolved to. Especially when each ingredients on that menu were cooked with lots of love and painstakingly prepped. To understand it, one must try it. The result? I wasted none of it (minus the fried peanuts.. 🤣)..
SEDAAAAAP! 👍🏻
The other food that we had were the traditional Fried Char Kway Teow. Sounds just like the usual yummy food? Yes. Taste wise? Don’t let the simple presentation and looks trick you. It packs a lot of flavours! Any wok hei to it? You betcha! Subtle, sweet, savoury and welcoming flavours. What more can you say.
To top it all off, we just had to try their toast set. Prepared the old school way upfront of their cafe, the owner recommended to have it fresh when they’re served. Toast were nicely grilled, not burnt, the sides were just a touch crispy while the kaya and butter served balanced everything on the plate. Not forgetting dipping all that goodness into those half boiled eggs (touch of white peppers pls! 🤣).
By the end of the whole meal, we were grinning ear to ear (perhaps me the most!). A nice chat with the owners and enjoying the whole experience was the perfect closure to the wonderful breakfast.
A definite return for me on the next visit across the causeway! Thank you for your warm hospitality and...
Read moreWe visited Local House Mount Austin and ordered a bit of everything to share — nasi lemak, laksa, chicken chop, and satay. I must say, the food was really tasty, and the whole vibe of the café was just superb.
It gives off this unique blend of old-school charm with a modern twist — the kind of place that carries the essence of a true local food spot, but with a refreshed, stylish feel. You know when a place just feels right? This was one of those.
The playlist? Even better. Nostalgic English songs from my younger days started playing, and it sparked a whole conversation with my kids. We ended up chatting, reminiscing, and just enjoying the food together — a rare kind of moment.
The owner was warm, sincere and super friendly, shared more food recommendations, and actually talked about real, current stuff. Like, not just “enjoy your meal” and vanish—actual convo that made us feel welcome. Appreciate that 🙏
Highly recommend this place if you want: ✅ Good food ✅ A place to exhale ✅ And a spontaneous family sing-along to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” while chewing ayam goreng 🫠😂
Now, to the food: • Laksa: It looks fiery red, but surprisingly not too spicy. I can take heat, but this one was flavourful without overpowering. The mix of yellow mee and bee hoon worked perfectly. The gravy was rich and thick, not watery — exactly how I like it. • Nasi lemak with ayam goreng: Can’t go wrong here. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside — simple and done well. • Chicken chop with curry sauce: Sounds like an odd combo, but trust me — it works. The chicken was fried, boneless and juicy, and the Hainanese sauce on the side (given complimentary!) tied it all together. A big hit with the kids. • Satay: We got it for sharing — chunky, juicy chicken satay that was full of flavour.
To top it off, the owner even shared some local spots to explore nearby. That kind of genuine hospitality really stands out.
In short — the food, vibe, and people here all blend so well. It’s more than just a meal — it’s an experience. Thank you...
Read moreWe visited on a rainy day and noticed there was only one table of customers inside. The moment we stepped in, it felt extremely hot and stuffy. We asked the staff about it, and the Malay female staff member told us the air-conditioning was turned off because the existing customers had requested it. While we understand that the weather was cooler due to the rain, the combination of no ventilation and active cooking made the environment unbearable. We ended up sitting outside instead.
Is the café prioritizing the comfort of just one table of customers over all others? That was disappointing.
We ordered the hor fun, which initially looked and smelled great. However, halfway through the meal, I bit into a piece of chicken that was half-cooked — completely unacceptable and off-putting. I informed the staff, and they took the dish back without even offering an apology. When the dish was returned, the presentation was noticeably poorer, and it felt like they had just replaced the chicken pieces instead of properly preparing a fresh plate.
This entire experience has been very disappointing, from the poor environment to the unsafe food and lack of customer service. Sadly, this will be my last visit. Not...
