It was relatively easy to find the place albeit a little challenging finding the entrance for the first time around 8PM. I'm visiting this branch as the st Mary branch had left me an amiable and pleasant memory. Now before i proceed i do not usually rant and complain unless i feel the compelling need to do so and in this case yes especially after a bill of RM200+.
the servers were foreigners but that was not the issue, the thing that annoyed me was the fact the waiter attempted to correct my enunciation of the word "escargot" which I felt rude and unnecessary.
Overall the food does not represent the price charged. It was alright but not up to par. The black ink squid pasta had been bathed in balsamic vinegar to the point i felt I was taking vinegar upright. Me and my partner could not even attempt to finish the first one bite we took. Not sure if it was the vinegar or the fact there is something wrong somewhere as the other dish turned out tasting weird as well.
I politely had it returned mentioning the issue. 10 minutes later a chinese young man which I presume is the manager decided to poke and prod which felt to me that he wasnt as concerned on the quality and issue but rather more so from a judgmental, defensive & justifying spectacle citing "SOP" standard of quality cooking and wanting you to feel you are wrong in thinking there is an issue with the food quality. ( Im not a food critique but i have eaten authentic italian pasta in Italy and the UK so im fairly certain of how western cuisines tastes like)
But they were kind enough to replace it for free with another seafood olio, which sadly we didnt finish as well.
Do not sit at the table which presides in front of the toilet, to avoid constant stare and observation by the waiters.
The "manager" disappears only to appear again after a group of young girls sat down. he now attempts to appear busy, important and working. He decided to walk over and at this point of time i thought maybe he is genuinely interested in rectifying this issue, after all its very important to maintain your business. Mentioning Seafood olio this time (we didnt finish it) that it again felt amiss he seems aloof in still citing the black ink squid pasta issue. Now i feel he is just asking for the sake of asking.
Marvin was a good server and the black sheep is the server with an exploding head and a never smiling face with a disdain expression ( from a customers perspective)
I would give 3 stars for the ambience and environment but 2 stars for their service and attitude. 2 stars for the food as I did not finish any of the food except for their delicious velvet cake and garlic escargot. So our RM200 dinner which we ATE consist of 2 velvet cakes, escargot, and pork ribs.
I will not attempt to come back here again and will go to St Mary's branch instead if i ever do decide to give Black Market a chance again.
Life is stressful enough as it is without having to arrive in a place which charges this price only to end up getting served the same quality service as a Mamak restaurant where i could still...
Read moreI recently dined at Black Market Restaurant and tried a variety of dishes—each one left a different impression.
The Truffle Linguine was the star of the meal. Rich, aromatic, and perfectly cooked, it had just the right amount of truffle flavor without being overpowering. Creamy and indulgent—definitely worth ordering again.
The Bak Kut Teh was decent, though not the most traditional version. The broth leaned more herbal than peppery, and while the pork was tender, it lacked depth in comparison to more authentic street-style renditions.
Nasi Lemak Banjir was a surprise favorite. The sambal was flavorful and packed heat, and the generous coconut gravy really tied the dish together. Comforting and satisfying.
The Beef Ribs were beautifully presented and fall-off-the-bone tender. However, the seasoning could have used a bit more boldness—still enjoyable, just not the most memorable.
Overall, Black Market delivers a unique menu with hits and minor misses. It’s a great spot for fusion lovers looking to try elevated versions of...
Read moreFirst time back to Black Market in years but standards have unfortunately dropped. Place looked a tad run down as well. No wonder it was so empty.
Food: Pork pizza was amazing tastewise but could do with more meat. Ribeye was good; didn't like the sauce but that can definitely be chalked up to personal reference as I dislike most wines. Sausage platter was nice. Scallops were so delicious that I wouldn't even be able to find anything to complain about even if I tried to. Mushroom soup sadly didn't have enough flavour despite having beautiful texture. Now to my main grouse, the beef short rib stew. The beef stew sauce was delicious. The meat on the ribs were unfortunately far tougher than the steak that my brother had; sent half of it back as I was far too tired of chewing leather. Salad and dessert were meh.
Service: The chaps do try but there were unfortunately some inadequacies. I specifically asked for still water. Twice. Still got sparkling water. Waiter asked me if we wanted ice to which I replied in the positive;...
