19 November, 2023: Agree with most reviewers here. The 300g AUS Wagyu Ribeye MB9 (medium rare) was beyond spot-on! Tender and soft, it hit all the spots with the right amount of taste, flavour, texture and bite. Matched with one of my favourite Shiraz (corkage was a mere MYR 30), I had a heavenly dinner. I also had sauteed mushrooms and broccoli as sides, and they were great as well! I found none of the negative reviews to be completely true. Read on..
This place IS NOT rundown! Some may not like the black painted walls and somewhat subdued lighting. That's just personal preference. Unhygienic? You peeps have not seen unhygienic! The service? Maybe it was my lucky day, but the service was excellent, given that this wasn't some black-tie establishment. Maybe, just maybe, the servers also wanted to be treated nicely, like we do? These aren't servers in Michelin-starred establishments. Yet they tried. I detected nothing even near the shadows of rudeness and aloofness. I normally try and be nice with servers. Try it. You'd be surprised by the results! My server actually came to check that everything was ok with my meal - on more than one occasion. As for the noise of the kitchen's exhaust fan, yes the ducting does run from the kitchen and over the heads of diners before it goes outside. Yes, there is a bit of a hum and din. But nothing so loud that one can't have a decent conversation! There were tables with people engaged in conversations without raising their voices!
I honestly can't understand why people rock up to a place like this, then expect something completely different! Seriously people - this is a no-frills place. Yet it has its charms. Don't go into a butcher stall (this was way more than that, trust me) expecting fine-dining levels of setup and service. If the latter is what you want, go to one! This place is all about the food. The great-tasting beef and so on. There are no pretensions, it doesn't try to be a place it is not, it doesn't dress-up, mislead or promise otherwise. So don't go to this place expecting to be treated like royalty! Would I bring a date here? Sure! My food-hunting partners know to appreciate good food without falling for superfluous Instagram-able trappings. This isn't a dinner-and-dance venue I grant you but trust me, taking your partner here won't end in a break-up or divorce. It may actually help foster a better relationship - good food mostly does. Honestly, for the lower prices this place charges compared with other establishments for equivalent menu items, Butcher Carey is a steal!
I AM NOT PAID FOR THIS. I don't know the proprietor, manager and servers. It was my first time here today. I just found some reviews a little unfair, unreasonable and unjustified. I WILL BE BACK FOR MORE. Keep it up...
Read moreDon’t know if it was just our bad luck but our meal here was severely disappointing. The best tasting thing that arrived was the onion rings, which should tell you something
Aglio Olio: Staff specifically asked if we wanted spicy/not spicy, we said spicy. What arrived was undercooked pasta (no, not al dente), with no hint of garlic nor spiciness
Garlic Bread: Seems like they use sandwich rolls instead of baguette. You could fold the garlic bread in 3
The mashed potato was fine, goopy like they blended it or something but whatever. We only ordered 1 400g steak thinking that if it’s good we’d order another. Very glad we went with this route. The staff condescended us for only ordering 1 steak. We ignored it. The ribeye came dry and overcooked even though we asked for medium. It seems to me that they highly focus on getting a deep sear instead of getting the right doneness. Sure there’s merit in a deep sear but what is it for if the customer has to eat grey meat? The foie gras was great but perhaps don’t serve it in a plate pooling with oil. It only takes a second to blot the foie gras before sending it out and it’ll taste much better too. Steak comes with soggy green salad. Very glad we chose the Devesa instead of something more high range considering how they cooked it. At the end of the day if your griller is good, even a RM30 cut can taste fantastic and vice versa……
I won’t talk about the ambience of the restaurant, but I agree with everything else other people has said. The restaurant was dirty too, there was food droppings on my seat. The staffs attitudes certainly did not help with the...
Read moreSteak was good, but staffs there are not trained to serve. Requested for a bottle of mineral water with ice, but she refused to serve the ice, noting that they only buy ”expensive” ice, so it can’t be drink with water. Totally weirded out by her concerns of serving a single glass of ice, considering the price of their steaks. She served it reluctantly at the end, but emphasised that it’s only this time she’ll serve a glass of ice, with 6 ice cubes in the glass. FML
We also brought some balloons along for some celebration, but the same waitress kept insisting on how our balloons will be flying all over the place. All she had to do is keep one single wall fan off, and the problem is fixed, but she just keep pasturing me like an old school driving instructor, asking me to fix the height to of balloon to be below the fan, rather than helping me sort things out! I had to explain very slowly and nicely to her on just keeping one single fan off for the hour, just to shed some simple logic to connect the few missing dots in her thoughts.
The bill was RM700+ for 4 pax, but no credit card service available. Guess you have to bring a huge stash of cash every time you visit this place. It appears that they’re trying their best to save any single pennies they can, while selling steaks in the hundreds. Penny wise, pound foolish, not a place that runs with customer in mind.
Not a place for date night, just a place for a good steak. Ignore the waitress (or maybe store manager/owner), and you’ll have a more...
