Getting to the restaurant is already a new experience. You'll pass through narrow housing streets before coming to Jalan Batalong. And as you step into the restaurant, you will feel like you're no longer in KL.
The restaurant has many signature dishes but you'll need to be there with at least 8 pax and above to enjoy the yummy dishes. 1) Steam fish is popular, and was very nicely done. You can truly taste the freshness of the fish because the chef toned down on its gravy and condiments. 2) Crab was good. The gravy may be too sweet for some, and too spicy for others but it tasted alright to me. Dip into it with mantou and you won't need to order rice. 3) Pork knuckle is special here because they recommend you to wrap the meat with their own preserved vegetable (ham-choy). Don't worry, the ham-choy has a tinge of sweetness and goes well with the deep fried pork meat. This dish came with a bowl of gravy which none of us thought much of. 4) Plain stir-fried vegetable is very good. The secret must be in the broth they use. 5) Steam/smoked chicken is amazing too. But as said earlier, you'll need a good quorum of eaters to enjoy all the great dishes in the menu. 6) We ordered a fried noodle (Hokkien style). I'd say you can skip this one.
Overall, it's pricey but it's expected because of the meat dishes, including the huge and fresh...
Read moreWe picked Restaurant 88 for our Mother's Day dinner, a big group of 11 of us. The bill came out to RM 1074, and honestly, we left feeling pretty disappointed.
First off, the place was full of mosquitoes, which made it really uncomfortable. And there was no air conditioning, so it was quite stuffy.
We ordered Chinese tea that cost RM 19.50, but it tasted like plain tap water and wasn't even hot. That was a bad start.
Some of the food was okay. The Half Poached Chicken (RM 55) and the Roasted Chicken (RM 55) were actually quite good, and everyone loved the Sweet and Sour Pork.
But the signature Loofa Prawn Soup (RM 234) was just normal. The prawns were huge, but they tasted like farmed prawns and definitely weren't worth that price.
The STEAMED FISH (RM 450) was fresh and big, but it had no taste at all, which was a real letdown. I wouldn't recommend it.
The worst dish was the Fried Tofu. It was weird because there was a big, hard piece of carrot inside for some reason.
We also ordered the lamb curry with bread, but the portion was so small that we couldn't even try it.
Overall, our Mother's Day dinner at Restaurant 88 wasn't a happy experience. With the mosquitoes, the lack of air conditioning, and some overpriced and tasteless dishes, I wouldn't really...

The boss and a male staff (uncle) were extremely rude and judgmental. Because we weren’t too familiar with how to order and portion sizes, we politely asked the staff a few questions and were met with a horrible attitude. The staff responded impatiently.
It might have been because we didn’t order expensive dishes like fish or seafood, the service afterwards was rude. One dish we specifically requested without onions and garlic came with both. Another dish never even arrived, we waited an hour!
When we confronted them about it, there was no apology at all, just more impatience and bad attitude. At the end, the boss came over and loudly said in Cantonese, “No need to bother with young people like them next time, they won’t order anything expensive anyway.”
If your restaurant doesn’t welcome young people or customers who don’t order expensive dishes, then please put a sign out front saying: “Customers not ordering premium dishes are not welcome.”
We didn’t come here to spend money only to be treated like this. We've already warned family and friends to stay away, and posted our experience on IG & FB. We will never come back.
Also: the environment was terrible — full...
