Updated Review – February 2025

Restaurant New Lagoon has been a go-to spot for me since childhood, and despite no longer residing in Malacca, I used to make it a must-visit whenever I was in town. However, after today’s experience, I will not be returning.

The Cheese Prawn Mee Hoon (minimum order: two prawns) has increased in price from RM90 to RM120, yet the prawn size was so small that I honestly questioned whether I had received the correct order. For context, I dined at another very popular restaurant nearby yesterday, and their cheese mee hoon also came with two prawns of a similar size—yet was priced at only RM55. The price hike and portion size at New Lagoon are simply outrageous.

As for the small cod fish I ordered today (RM90), it was shockingly thin—about half a centimeter thick—something I’d expect from a roadside stall, not a well-established restaurant. I have never encountered a restaurant serving such a meager portion of cod fish.

In the past, even though the food wasn’t particularly outstanding, the reasonable pricing and decent portions made it a justifiable choice. However, after today's meal, the taste remains unimpressive, while the pricing and portion sizes have become completely unreasonable. There is simply no longer any selling point for this restaurant.

I can’t help but wonder—has the management changed? Whatever the case, this will be my last visit.

Previous Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Updated Rating: ⭐⭐ (generous only because of past nostalgia)

Pictures of food are from March 24 where I gave a good review. For current visit I don't even have the mood to take pictures as felt totally rip off.

March 2024 review

Restaurant New Lagoon has been a go-to spot for me since childhood, and even though I no longer reside in Malacca, it's a must-visit whenever I'm back in town. The prices are reasonable, and the service has always been top-notch. What sets them apart is their modest 5% service charge, which feels fair considering the full-fledged service they provide, unlike some other places that charge 10%.

However, there's room for improvement, particularly in maintaining consistent food quality. During my visit in early March 2024, the Cheese Prawn Mee Hoon (2 prawns for RM90) was absolutely delightful, with a decent portion of mee hoon and generous-sized prawns. Sadly, my experience in mid-March 2024 was disappointing - the mee hoon portion was inadequate for even one adult, the prawns were smaller, and the taste was just average.

On a positive note, the small cod fish I ordered in March 2024 was satisfyingly sized and tasted great. However, when I decided to splurge on a medium cod fish in mid-March 2024 (priced around RM150), I was surprised to receive a portion similar to the small size I previously ordered. It was disheartening to pay a 50% premium and receive the same portion as before.

Overall, Restaurant New Lagoon remains a reliable choice with reasonable prices and good service, but consistency in food quality could significantly enhance the...

Customer service: -Waitress was very attentive and hard working. Whenever they refill our tea when it was almost half a cup really reminded me of when I was working as a waitress xD

Polite and friendly, have experience knowledge on handling food ( for ex. they will ask if you would like the food to be transferred into smaller plates as there are new dishes coming in)

Restaurant & Toilet: -Quite neat, clean and organized. Overall a comfy atmosphere to have a proper reunion dinner/ sorts.

Food ( Was personally invited so I'm not sure what were some the dishes called)

roasted crispy baby pig was great! cooked perfectly.

prawn salad wasn't to my liking but most of the people there loved it! If you like seafood/ shrimp fried especially then defo give it a try.

broccoli vege mix with seafood? That one was quite nice as they did not overpowered it with too much oyster sauce I believe.

Soy sauce fish with ginger I believe? It was actually quite nice too, for someone who rarely eat fish, it was quite tasty. The meats are soft and they somewhat melts in your mouth. They used just enough sauces that it wasn't too salty/ jelak! recommend this!

fried fish with mozzarella cheese in 2nd pic was nice but wouldn't recommend eating too much may feel jelak due to the batter, unless u like tempura ish batter.

thousand island chicken? the one with the dot sauce on top of the chicken (2nd pic). I feel that it doesn't goes together so I don't really like them, just my preference.

the jelly on top of the deco ( 2nd pic) is like a sweet, lightly sour konjac, this was quite nice as well, the texture was very interesting almost like eating sea grapes.

duck meat and fried chicken was quite okay ( 3rd pic) tho the duck meat is a little bit saltier imo.

fried Mee fun/ mi fun was very nice, nicely seasoned. if you like the super wokhey taste then this might not be the best choice tho.

overall if you want a fancy dinner once in a while, definitely come here and try their food. A bit pricey but I think overall it's...

Update 9 Sep 2023 We were invited by my wife's second sister-in-law to celebrate her 65th birthday. The dining rooms have recently been face-lifted and look even more posh for fine dining.

The evening brought us to Restaurant New Lagoon, where we celebrated the birthday of Sally's second sister-in-law. The dinner kickstarted with a big bang with a whole roast pig followed by the tradition long-life noodles! The feast consisted of a special eight-course meal, starting with a delightful lobster 4- season combinations hot platter and concluding with the birthday cake-cutting ceremony. In between, we savored exquisite dishes like steamed patin fish, lemon fried chicken, baked rice with prawns in claypot, braised pork knuckles with sea cucumbet, deep fried kailan veggies with scallop, and traditional desserts.

A well-established restaurant great for family celebrations, now in a new and much bigger venue with more contemporary decor and setting in the suburb of Melaka. We attended our relative's 70-year birthday celebration dinner here last year. The menu was individually selected by his 3 adult children. We were given a private room with a karaoke set up. Overall everybody was happy and enjoyed the meal and...

This is Cantonese Restaurant located in Melaka. It is a big restaurant and has a nice set up. The restaurant offers general dining area and private function rooms. A popular restaurant for wedding, family and company receptions. The restaurant serves great Cantonese food. Standard of food preparation is good. Quality of food is good and fresh. Food portions are reasonable. Alcohol beverages are available here. A reasonable range of Chinese Tea is available. Service is fast, good and professional. Cleanliness is good. Washrooms are available within the restaurant and we'll maintained. Prices are reasonable. Parkings are roadside parkings. Handicapped patrons on wheelchairs can patronize this restaurant easily. 28-10-2023 : Attended a function held here. The restaurant able to host a reasonably big function well. Food and service were maintained at the big function event. 12-02-2024: Pleasantly surprised a Lion Dance Troupe was visited the main banquet hall when I was attending a Chinese New year Year lunch function. Food portions and food quality are maintained. Still a popular place for good quality Chinese dining. 26-94-2025 : Still a very popular restaurant among the locals. Their Roasted Suckling Piglet and Steamed Fish are food and recommended.
