Last weekend, my family and I visited Genting Highlands to escape the heat. With Genting's cool weather, vibrant environment, and exciting theme parks, it has always been a favorite getaway for us. This time, we decided to explore a new dining spot—Grand Cha Chaan Teng. We decided to give it a try, and here’s a quick rundown of our experience:
Food we tried: Kampung Fried Rice: Must Try! This was the standout dish for us. It featured crunchy anchovies, a bit of spice without being overly hot, and fresh prawns. It felt like a more "atas" (upscale) version of the classic kampung fried rice—delicious and agreed upon by all of us as the best dish we had in this restaurant. It's pricier than what you’d find at a small vendor stall, but that's expected given the Sky Avenue location next to the casino. I would prefer they add "Kangkung" and not garnish with spring onion but it is still very tasty.
Char Kuey Teow: Made with fresh ingredients, including prawns that weren’t treated with baking soda, allowing the natural taste of the prawn meat to shine through, which we really appreciated. It reminded us of a halal version of CKT at Madam Kwan. Though it didn’t quite match the flavor of our usual go-to spot, it could still appeal to some, especially when paired with red chili soaked in soy sauce for an extra kick.
Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah: The sambal and fried chicken were decent. This dish was a hit for some of us, but it didn’t quite reach the level of Nasi Lemak from Village Park/ Burung Hantu version. However, the unique blue rice was fragrant and had a charming look, which added a nice twist.
Rice with Sambal Udang: A decent dish, but it lacked the level of spiciness I usually enjoy.
Chicken Chop: It was a pretty standard offering, but still enjoyable.
Atmosphere: Busy and lively with a charming and relaxed vibe—perfect for families.
Service: The restaurant is quite spacious, with multiple sections for seating, and busy when we visited, so there were a couple of times we had to raise our hands and wave to get the staff's attention. However, once they noticed, they quickly came to assist us, so overall, the service was okay.
Overall: While the food isn’t necessarily bad, the higher prices at Grand Cha Chaan Teng may set a higher expectation for quality that isn't always met. The dining experience was still pleasant, with a welcoming atmosphere, the china plates were lovely adding an elegant touch to the dining experience with their intricate designs and charming details, and a variety of options to explore. We’d consider returning!

Read moreIt was my first time dining here, and I was actually quite surprised by the overall food quality – better than expected for a place in Genting.
What we liked: • Roast Pork (4.5/5): Crispy skin, well-seasoned, and satisfying with every bite. One of the highlights of our meal. • Char Siew (4.5/5): Tender and flavorful. They used fatty cuts, which were roasted to perfection – rich and juicy. • Char Kway Teow (4/5): Impressive wok hei! You can tell the chef knows what they’re doing with this dish.
What didn’t impress: • Roast Duck (3/5): Pretty average. Not bad, but didn’t stand out compared to the other roasted meats. • Peanut Butter Toast (2/5): Disappointing. Dry, bland, and lacked the fragrance or flavor you’d expect from a simple classic.
Service (-5/5): This is where the entire experience took a nosedive. I had read reviews about poor service, and unfortunately, they were spot on. One of the staff—a young lady—was shockingly rude. When serving our straws, she practically threw them onto the table without a word, as if we’d offended her. It wasn’t just a bad day kind of attitude—it felt personal and unnecessary.
To the management: your food has potential, but that kind of service ruins the entire experience. A bit of basic customer service training would go a long way in keeping customers...
